Why is there a "white space" in the middle of my snapshot? Maybe it's the "hard bottom return" the manual refers to.<br /><br />

Where's the pic?
What is the actual depth? Is the digital readout correct or is it very shallow and the digital readout is jumping around? Looks like a double return over hard bottom in about 3ft of water.
If I recall correctly, the depth is shown correctly. I do know that when I am in shallow water, the depth reading jumps all over the place, usually when I am five feet or less. I think I read someplace that it might be a software issue with HB. I also want to mention that when the snapshot was made, I was not moving. I was dead in the water at the time. Does that make a difference?
I am new at this and this is my first HB. Thanks to all on this forum for the great tips and answers.
what unit are you useing?...rick
The top colored line is the depth, the bottom colored line is the echo that is twice the depth. The white space between them is the water column above the echo.
If you had been recording during that screen shot and played it back on Humviewer, you probably would have seen more echos at multiple depths of the top actual depth line.
The digital depth is incorrect. That is the shallow depth reading "problem" that a lot of users experience.

Well, conceivably if you were dead in the water the top return could be a suspended limb or some other piece of structure above the bottom at that particular point. But if I was putting money on it with no info other than the pic I'd stick with 3 ft of depth and a double return.
I am using an 898c. I love the unit and am still in the learning stage. Like they say "no sense fishing were they ain't".
