    Leaky fireplace

My fireplace leaks on the inside in the front. I've covered the top of the chimney with a tarp to simulate a chimney cap, still drips. Applied roofing tar around base of chimney still leaks. No problem with the ceiling around the chimney it just drips inside. Anybody got any ideas??

Do you have flashing on it? It could be leaking at the flashing. If there is a groove in it, may not be cut deep enough. No flashing may need to be sealed and put flashing in. Pictures would help I am sure there is a roofer here that can help you out. I am not a roofer.

Do you have the flue open to were warm air is going up and condensates then is dripping back down?

There is flashing around the chimney, the flue is closed, it leaks when it rains. I have went over the flashing with roofing tar. Could the bricks need to be sealed with a water sealant?

Any gaps on the top of the chimney around the flue?
Your first post you said you have a tarp to simulate a chimney cap. Is just the flue opening covered or the whole top of the chimney covered.
Check for any cracks in the mortar joints of the brick.
If weather permits get a hose and start low and work your way up the chimney until you can find the possible point of water entry.

I covered the whole top of the chimney, getting out the hose sounds like a logical next approach.

Two years ago we had a leak in our fireplace and could not find it. We had the roof replaced along with flashing. Kept calling the roofer back about a leak. Finally ended up water proofing the chimney brick and that stopped it.

could be getting under the shingles but still on top of the felt paper farther up the roof and then working its way down to the chimmeny and getting in that way........so it wouldn't be the flashing or chimmney cap......and no matter what you do to either it won't stop the leak beacuse the water is already underneath what your working on

I had the same issue when we bought our house. It was new construction. The builder ended up having to build a small peak behind the chimney.
