Drywall Question

I have recently been given a small older home that has a ceiling height of around 9 foot 7 inches. The walls currently have wood paneling and a 4 inch tongue and groove boards covering the entire walls. I have a question about hanging drywall in the house.

I plan on taking down the wood paneling but am unsure about taking down the tongue and groove boards they are solid and are not spaced its like a solid wall.

If I was to hang 10 foot long pieces of drywall vertical would it be ok? To me this would save a finisher the less then two foot strip that it will require to fully cover the wall.

I know I can get stretch rock that would be 4.5 foot in width but that still leaves me with 7 inches at the top or the bottom. I can also get standard 4 foot width pieces that will leave around 1.5 to 2 foot at either the top or bottom.

Anyway I guess my question is to the finishers how mad would you be with drywall hung vertical as opposed to horizontal. I know there would be a joint every 4 feet that runs the entire height of the wall but would this be better then hanging two 4 foot sections or two 4.5 foot sections and having to put a small piece in the bottom or the top?....

Thanks in advance any comments are greatly appreciated

IMO get the guys that are going to do your work opinion. Most residential hangers/finishers will prefer it to be horizontal. This is the way I would hang it if it were mine. The only time hanging verticle is good IMO is in a commercial application and steel studs are used. The steel is much straighter than wood and you can get away with the verticle joints. Hanging horizontal hides many of the imperfections in the wall.

Are you going to hang and then pay someone else to finish or what? If so, do yourself a favor by having someone give you a quote on doing it all and just finishing. In my experience you won't save very much at all because most finishers HATE going back over unexperienced hangers and fixing their mistakes and they charge a lot for it. In most cases you are better off just having someone do it all for you. Good luck.

Yes I was going to hang it myself and have someone come in and finish it. I am getting a cost of around 13 dollars a sheet to hang it and that just seems so high to me.

The finish cost was 20 cents a square foot plus 10 dollars for outside cornors.

I will hang it horizontal if I decide to do it I was just wondering about opinions on the vertical.

I've hung and mudded alot of drywall. It never made any difference to me if it was horizontal or vertical. As long as the drywall joints are good, there's no problem mudding them either way. Many guys hang it horizontally (as do I), but it not a must do. A good mudder can hide most any seams.

That does sound high to just hang. Around for a new house it is $7-$8 to hang and $8-$10 to finish. But this is for a whole house. A smaller job is going to be higher but I wouldn't think that high. Both the guys above said they wouldn't mind so I guess just do it however you are comfortable.

Your ceiling height is 9' 7". Hang it vertical and use 10' drywall. Less seams and much easier to finish.

+1 I would hang it vertical. If the wall has a wave in it you will see it either way you hang it...rock bends
