Throttle at wide open...non idle speed...Help guys!

Guys, I have a problem and need some input. I put a new cranking battery in my boat today and after I hooked up all the cables(I am sure they are going to the correct spot because I tied them together before I disconnected old battery), I decided to start motor for 1-2 seconds just to make sure all was well. When it started, it went to wide open throttle. Did I screw something up? I tried it a couple of times. No check engine lights or alarms sounded. the exhaust fumes didn't smell like they usually do either. I fished a tournament on Saturday and it ran fine and I put it on the trailer and didn't notice any idle issues. This is a 2004 Evinrude 225 HO direct injection. By the way, this isn't my 1st post....just couldn't get logged in with old username and password.

Could be a bad TPS! If the butterflies are not open on the throttlr bodies then the smell would be different due to lack of air.

I sure hope it's not the TPS. I had 4 different ones replaced until Gary at C&O found a bad connector on the wiring harness. It's been trouble free for a year. Is there something I can look for visually with regard to linkages?

Could a TPS get messed up with me switching batteries?

You can remove the air box and make sure the throttle plates are closed at idle. Move the remote or hot foot forward and confirm travel. To properly troubleshoot the TPS you would need to hook up the diagnostic tool.

Check to make sure that none of the throttle plates are stuck open or something jamming the TPS open.

Remove both pulse lines to the crankcase on the fuel pump and look for any fuel leakage. Pump the ball very hard and hold it for a few minutes while someone checks the lines.

Thanks for the reponses guys. I pushed the TPS plug in a little and then started motor and it acts fine. Not sure if it was a little loose, or there may have been extra fuel in the cylinders that dissipated over night. We shall see on Saturday. At least if anything goes wrong, I am launching the boat at a Marina services Evinrude motors.
