    Cabbage Stew...YUM

    got this from a co-worker.

    On my 2nd pot in 3 days.

    1 lb hamburger (browned and drained)
    1 1/2 cup chopped cabbage
    1 1/2 cup chopped onion
    1/2 cup celery
    1 cup water
    1 (15oz) can Kidney beans..DO NOT DRAIN
    1 (15oz) can stewed tomatoes..DO NOT DRAIN
    1/2 Tsp Chili powder.....or more to taste
    Salt and pepper to taste

    Add hamburger to all the above ingredients
    Bring to Boil, then turn down to simmer (3-4 on the dial)
    cook for at least 30 minutes or untill cabbage is tender...

    Made a batch and it was great, Next time I'm gonna put a can of tomato sauce in it.

    So far..I have made these changes.

    I precook the cabbage with fatback, it makes it really tender and gives it a sweet taste, and since I love cabbage, I put in 3 times the amount called for.

    Also.....I have taken the chili powder from 1/2 tspn to a full tablespoon, and its still not quite enough.

    I like the idea of adding tomatoe sauce.

    Cabbage Stew


    Ingredients

    1 pound lean ground beef 1 onion, chopped 1 (15 ounce) can ranch-style beans 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 1/2 cups chopped cabbage 1 green bell pepper, chopped 1 (14.5 ounce) can stewed tomatoes, with liquid 2 stalks celery, chopped 1/4 cup picante sauce 1 cup water salt to taste freshly ground pepper, to taste

    Directions

    In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef with the onion. Drain fat.
    Combine ranch-style beans, cumin, garlic, cabbage and green pepper in crock pot. Stir in stewed tomatoes, celery, picante sauce, water, and beef mixture. Salt and pepperr to taste.
    Cover and cook for 6 to 8 hours.
