Punching mats is something I am planning to do next year. I am getting things all put together (buying this and that) tks for the tip on type of knot used

Make sure you get some punch skirts too!
I am planning on that also. I was looking also at the Miller punching weights also. There is a big tackle show coming up and will check out some things there. Was going to fish monday but they are calling for High of 38 or so. Guess I will clean some reels instead.

I saw a video on Miller Punching weights, but have not seen them or fished them myself
If you have soft water now...I'm envious!!
Around here today...7.5 inches of ice was augered..... would be hard to punch.
I need to live somewhere warmer!!

I bet you could find open water if you looked hard enough
Rich,
With the snell knot, Will adding a bead between hook and weight hinder the action of the hook at all, or will it still kick out to the side??
Bill
I don't usually use a bead when punching, I have not tried, I would just tie on up each way at home and compare, them post your thoughts/results here when done![]()
The knot in the vid make sense with a straight shank hook but I donÂt use this stile hook. IÂve experimented with many, many different kinds of hooks and the best one that works for me is a mustad needle point EWG 4/0. You can use your standard polymer or any knot you feel most comfortable with. The main thing with this hook is that you never have to set the hook hard on a fish. Its more of a c-rig hook set. This hook works like a typical circle hook and the biggest mistake people make is setting too hard on a fish. I use this hook for flipping, t-rig, t-rig senko and one of my favorite during a spawn weightless trick-worm technique with a 2/0. All you have to do is tighten up the line and pull up until you feel the fish. I also think that with this technique you donÂt shock the fish into going crazy on you especially when fishing docks or heavy brush. The other advantage is that your line wont break as often on a hook set. It works for me and I hope you guys try it some time. I try to teach this technique to all my clients during my guide trips and those who become comfortable with are amazed how easily fish come out of some of the heaviest cover.![]()
