Create a Fishing Journal using Microsoft InfoPath 2007

I started out making a fishing journal and launched good ole Microsoft Excel and started adding columns. Well after putting in several weeks of entries, the thing just didn’t work. It wasn’t dynamic, I couldn’t list lures used unless I left several columns for lures. Same issue for colors. I had to type in data for weather conditions, anglers and species. There had to be a better way. Microsoft Access is a database application, that’s got to work better, right? Ouch! Maybe I didn’t give it a fair chance but it was complicated to figure out how to incorporate what I was trying to do. Introducing Microsoft InfoPath 2007, still need a learning curve but just reading the help on what each control did, it wasn’t too hard to figure out.
    Here is my layout:

Date (date picker) Launch location (combobox:has pulldown or can type in)

    Areas Fished (text Box)

(following group all use text boxes)
Hours Fished: to ex: 10:00am to 5:45pm
    Best Hours Fished: to
    Air Temp High/Low: /
    Water Temp:
    Water Clarity:

Rating: Poor Fair Good Great (Option button only 1 can be selected)

CoAngler (checkboxes: can click to check any amount)
    Artie Dad Jared
    Aaron Al

Weather ( more checkboxes for each weather condition)
    Skies Morning Afternoon Evening
    Sunny
    Mostly Sunny
    Mostly Cloudy
    Cloudy
    Foggy

    Precipitation Morning Afternoon Evening
    None
    Rain - Light
    Rain - Heavy

    Wind Morning Afternoon Evening
    None
    Very Light - <5 knots
    Light - 5 to 10 knots
    Moderate - 10 to 15 knots
    Strong - 15+ knots

Notes: (large text box made this one to fill out the 1st page of the form to keep the next section together)

(this entire grouping here is a Horizontal Repeating section and each has distinct controls within each row listed. All are text boxes unless noted Repeating sections allow you to add another series at will depending how many you need for each)

    Angler (combo box)
    Number
    Species (combo box)
    Average Size
    Lure
    Brand/Type (combo box:crankbait, spinnerbait etc)
    Color
    Time Caught
    Water Depth
    Fish Depth
    Lunker
    Retrieve(combo box)

    Notes: (large text box)

(repeating section again for pictures and set the picture property size to 4" height and auto width)
    Pics

    Close (button)

    (this is end of form)

When you are done with your design you have to publish it, i choose to a network location and typed in c:\Journal template using this to publish to. You can then enter your data into the form and I would save each form with the date(2008 01 19.xml) format.

If anyone wants me to email them my form and they can modify it to fit their log I just PM me or post your email. I can also email an entry of my layout so you can see the repeating sections in work. Just let me know.

Where did you get the program? I do not have it on my computer. Is it something you purchased?

I have tried Microsoft Access and you are correct, you need a four year degree to use Access.

Thanks for the post, just curious where I can get the program....Thanks

It's part of MS Office. I got a copy of the form, but only then did I realize I have Office 2003 and it wont' open it.

Re: Create a Fishing Journal using Microsoft InfoPath 2007 (Javelin389)

Let me see if I can Save As 2003 format....

... no dice. I looked at the 2003 version and it doesnt have 2 features which I thought really added to my design. The control being a Combo Box, which is basically a drop-down box and a text box merged into 1 box. So if you didn't see a choice you liked from the pull-down, you could just type it in manually. The other feature is the Horizontal Repeating Section. In my form above, it is the area where the form lists the Angler, Lure, Color etc. Not to say you couldnt have it repeating below but it didnt work the same for me.

If you want me to design something for ya to get you started, I could throw something together using 2003. But if you have a cool IT guy where you work and they have it, well.... I can't tell you how many times I had a copy of Office laying on my desk and come back from lunch and it be missing! Gahh! Can you believe that!?

Nah, don't bother with it. I'm going to see if I can get my hands on 2007 soon.

Re: Create a Fishing Journal using Microsoft InfoPath 2007 (shaneo)

i'm currently putting together a web based program to keep my journals in. It will be fully searchable and i will able to access from anywhere with internet connection. it will also have the ability to upload and attach photos to each entry. i only have data back from 2004, but you got to start somewhere right?

I may in the future think about letting it go to the public. But this is in my spare time and its only about 30% completed. I'm looking at another 3 months to get the first working version.

Future plans with it are getting it to pull daily weather reports so that it can email notices of things such as low pressure days, full/new moon days, etc.

There is one on the web at http://onlinefishinglog.com/

It's fairly good and I got a few ideas from their site but modified it to data I wanted to track.

Not a bad Fishing log. Free demo version and the price is quite reasonable.
Has neat features to inventory your gear keep track of boat/motor serial numbers also.
Lots cheaper than MS Office 2007.

It's no problem at all folks. Will send when I get home. Some that have gotten it cannot open it because of the way InfoPath works with security and am trying to figure it out. After all, I just started using it when I made this form.
