Spooling your spinning reel (Feb. tip)

When spooling my spinning reel I have found that it works much better when tension is put on the line while spooling up. This can be tricky if done by yourself. here is what I do.

    1. Put a phone book on the edge of a coffee table.
    2. Put your spool of line on the ground about 6-8 inches away from the coffee table/phone book.
    3. Run the line through the middle of the phone book and through all the guides on your rod.
    4. Tie off to your spool and start to reel.
    5. BAM!!!!! Instant tension for your spinning gear.

I do this for all my spinning reels and it works great.

A friend of mine told me another tip that really works. No matter how careful I am in spooling my line, I always end up with a little twist for spinning reels.

Throw the spool, label side up, into your sink or a bucket of water. The spool will spin slowly as it spools off and completely eliminates ALL twist.

I was told years ago by a guy that was old then (my age now) just throw your spool in the lake and wind your line on, no twist.

I was told by an old man years ago that all spinning reels suck and I should throw them away. I haven't had a line twist issue since. J/K

DON'T throw the spool in the lake if your spooling 100% flourocarbon. It WILL go to the bottom! The sink/water bucket deal does work, though.

Good idea, but our phone book it about 1/4" thick. May have to borrow one.

I agree with Stratosfied, I dont use spinning tackle unless I really have to. I do the best I can to spool it twist free which never happens. Letting it trail behind the boat for a few minutes to untwist does work well. May have to give that bucket of water trick a try, that is if I remember it next fall when its time to respool my spinning reels

Re: Spooling your spinning reel (Fisher)

Used to have mine spooled by a small Bass Pro Outlet in O'fallon MO.
They had a really nice machine that the line was threaded thru and worked
under tension and then wound on reel!
Even the big Bass Pro in St. Charles,MO doesn't do as good a job!
Wish I had paid more attention to the machine!
It was expensive but brought a lot of business to his shop!
Absolutely perfect job!!! Ahhhh the good ole days!!!!
Now I guess I'll go dig out a telephone book and a bucket of water!!

Re: Spooling your spinning reel (Fisher)

I hate spinning reels, but there are occassions to use them. One thing I do to keep the line from jumping off the spool is, after filling the spool, take the spool off and drop it in a cup of hot water, no boiling water, just hot from the tap, this will relax the line and it will not jump off the spool. I have been doing this for at least 15 years and have never, ever had a problem since.

I used to do the catalog thing for years --phone book was way too small. Just watched for twist by dropping the rod tip and relaxing the line. If present, flip the spool over. I recently saw a Classic Patterns in which Iaconelli was spooling spinning reels. Right off the spool--bulk or filler. He just ran the line thru a hand held folded towel for tension. He also had sprayed the towel surface with a silicon spray--your choice, KVD, Reel Magic, store brand etc. Removes the chalk from the line, and the twist and is applied under some tension. Found it to be very easy and effective.

I usually spool up in a similar fashion on my spinning reels. No matter what I do, line twist always happens. You just cant keep it from happening. So, I ALWAYS put a swivel on. I have never had a problem since. I can fish a shakey head all day long and not worry about line twist, but only if I put the swivel on there.

Re: Spooling your spinning reel (teelman)

Try this when spooling your reel. Crank the handle about 10 or 15 turns. Lower your rod tip. If you see your line starting to twist flip the spool over and crank 15 or so cranks again and lower your rod tip again and if twisted flip the spool again. Keep doing this until the spool is full and you twists will all but disappear. And after you make a cast close the bail by hand and give the line a little tug with your hand. Most line twists happen when you turn the handle after the cast. I fish 5 bait casters and 4 spinning reels. And if I have 1 birds nest in the spinning reels a year it's a lot. And I change the mono line 5-6 times a year. The braid only once. Try it and you will see what I mean.
