Leave The Plug Out???

It's embarrassing to admit, but I have launched my boat without the plug - Twice (not recently). So I made a little reminder to prevent that from happenning again. Loosely connected a cable tie to one of my rear boat tie down straps (the metal hook part). Wrote "PLUG" on an extra Plano plastic box divider and drilled a small hole in it and attached a metal clip to it. When I remove the plug I attach the clip to the tie down on the rear strap. Since I have to remove the strap to launch the boat I'll be reminded that the plug is out. Keep it in the glove box when the plug is in.

kbkindle here can i ask why you take the plug out i do but only after our season is over and have to wintreize.. kb if there is that much water in boat you have a problem

I take mine out after every trip. Lets out all the water, the bilge pump cant get it all.

I remove my plug after I load everytime. Always have always will

Mostly only remove the plug when I wash the carpet or after fishing in the rain.

You should establish a routine to do when you get to the ramp. Do the same thing in the same order every time and you want forget anything. The first thing I do when I get to the ramp is I get out of the truck and go straight to the back of the boat and put the plug in, then I take off the port strap, then the starboard strap, then the motor support. Then I put the lights on and I am ready to launch. Once you establish a routine and do it the same every time you want forget anything (like the plug or a strap).

My boat is stored outside an even with a cove some water gets in so I always take the plug out an hook it on the hook of the tiedown strap then hook the tiedown strap. When at the ramp unhook the tiedown strap take off the plug an put it in.

If you have a plug that you have to install from the outside, as many do, the plug can actually get loose from vibrations going down the road and fall out. I used to put the plug in before leaving the house until one day I put the boat in the water only to discover that there was no plug. It had fell out somewhere between home and the boat landing.

Thinking that I didn't tighten it enough, on the next trip I made sure that it was good and tight. Was still in at the landing but when I got home and decided to check it, the plug was loose. This had to be caused by road vibrations as I am sure it was very tight when I left the house.

This probably is not a problem if you install the plug from the inside of the boat but beware if you install it before you get to the ramp. You'll end up like me, putting the boat in the water without a plug.

When I ramp out I always pull the plug. The first thing I do when I get home is hook up the battery charger. On the cord to the charger I have a piece of masking tape with a note put plug back in.

The plug on my boat has the flip up ring on it. When I take it out I hang it on the tiedown hook.

When my boat is out of the water...the plug is out of the boat.

i keep my boat key in the cup holder just below the ignition switch. My plug is in there too.
My last few boats had the plastic screw in plugs with holders that stayed just outside the drain. If I forgot I would get a reminder when my auto bilge pump would come on 30 minutes after launching. The water coming into the boat would suck the plug back in the hole and only a drip would come in. I wish all boats had these.
