    Johnson Maintenance

Can someone give me an idea as to what I need to be doing to my 99 Johnson 200 in regards to regular maintenance? I just got the boat 3 weeks ago and it did not come with a owners manual. This is my first boat and it will probably need to last me 10 years or so according to the wife.

I have been scouring this forum for information and I have gotten a lot of it from here which is really cool. I keep hearing about carb cleaning, fogging etc and I really don't have a clue what I should be doing and what I really don't need to do.

Unfortunetly for me there isn't a BRP dealer close by so I can't pick their brain which knowing the dealers around here they won't give you any information anyway. I would like to buy a owners manual or service manual but I really don't know which one to get that would have everything in it that I need. So any help there would be great.

As for the other stuff. Should I run XD100 or XD50 in it? What is the difference between the two and if I run the XD stuff do I need to run the carb cleaner on it? It looks like it has the original plugs in there as well which doesn't surprise me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Johnson Maintenance (MNJAVELIN)

if no records exist, start with filters and plugs/ also do a decarbon--get the good stuff from BRP and read the directions on the can---easy to follow----ck different things like lower unit lube for condition and replace if it has any whitish streaks in the oil---also ck the lower plug which should be a magnet and see if there is any metal stuck to it/////////////////if you have a water psi guage what readings and at what rpm's------may want to replace impeller in lower unit for water pump just to be safe-------------------

there is a lot to do when you purchase a used boat and engine and there are no service records-----just do a little at a time if that is all you can do but most importantly----GET_R_DONE

xd100 is synthetic and you do not need to decarbon when running it/////////xd50 would be the better choice. it does not build up depositis like other oils and is cheaper than xd100 although you would need to decarbon once in a while

If you would like a owners and service manual give Reeda a call here at the shop and she can get them on the way to you. 615-847-4909

She will need your model number to get the correct manuals.

The guys will answer your question and I will check back this afternoon.

    Re: Johnson Maintenance (RUSTY63)

Thanks for the input guys. I have changed the lower unit oil but I was not able to get the stuff from BRP. I am going to try and get me some of the Ultra HPF that Rusty recommended for the fall since I only have about 2 more months before boating season is over.

As for the oil is there one that doesn't smoke as much as the other XD100 vs XD50? I was not able to get any BRP oil when I brought the boat home and the oil tank was low so I got some QuickSilver from Fleet Farm and used that for now. When I run XD50 or XD100 should I decarb the motor first before I start to use it?

I will give Reeda a call for the manuals when I get the exact model number off the motor tonight.

since you have a carb motor, it will smoke---thats life//////i dont know if xd-100 will smoke less than xd-50 though------it would seem to me that xd-100 would be overkill in your motor because it will still be mixed 50:1 ratio...yes de-carb now and start your maintenance regimine from scratch (plugs, lubes, filters, etc) then just keep it up//////////////you can not change what has or has not happened before now but at least now you can take care of it from hear on out......

Sorry about that Chris, I read his post and made mine....

One thing though, The XD-100 will make any John/Rude virtually smoke free.

    Re: Johnson Maintenance (ed396ranger)

I like the smell as well but my wife hates it so if I can get it to not smoke as much she is all for that. Even if the stuff is almost $50 a gal.
