    Securing Boat To Dock

I saw that several of you launch and fish alone, as I do, quite often. I got tired of getting out the rope etc to tie up to the dock, so I found a quicker and better way.

Purchase a couple of 24" bungee cords, and bend the hooks down a bit more
After launching I pull up to the courtesy dock, and hook one end to the boat cleat and the other to the dock cleat. Boat stays hooked and secure. When you get back remove them and toss them in the back compartment and go fish. No mess and no tangles.

That sounds quick and efficient better than what i'm doing now with all that rope.

Re: Securing Boat To Dock (borderbasser)

I use to do that but switched to a couple of short ropes 3-4 foot in length with a slip loop tied in each end. Put one around the boat cleat and one on dock cleat and your good to go. The reason I switched is that a freind of mine was using the bungee cords as well and one end snapped off one day and the cord came slapping back to the boat and chipped off a couple pieces of paint.

By using them, doesn't that keep you boat tight against the dock. My concern is the scratching of your rig on the dock. I know if it was doing that you would not keep using them. Are you using bumpers as well?

Our docks are flotaing, and when I tie up, the rub rail is against the wood side on the docks. If there is a lot of wave action, I just use my throw cushion as a bumper between dock and boat for the couple of minutes it is there.

I like the idea of using theshort pieces of rope too. May try that one

I use the short pieces of rope too. About three feet long. Usually just hook one of them up. If its rough I use both of them and put the throw cushion between the boat and dock.

I actually use the bungee dock chords sold at BPS. Each end has a slip loop and they stetch. The best of both worlds. They come in different lengths. I use one 5' and one 4'.

Re: Securing Boat To Dock (Randy)

I use bumper cushions for the back and front. I have a loop of rope just long enough to wrap around the boat cleats and hang down. That way the front and back are protected from the POS docks that seem to be at all the lakes around here. Got tired of getting scratches and even worse on the gel coat. I just can't understand why docks are built with all kinds of jagged edges sticking out when they know most boats are made out of fiberglass.

Re: Securing Boat To Dock (Ticman)

I have four ropes with looped end's that I tied specifically for docking use.

I use the prevailing wind (alway's present) and let the boat float out on the end of the rope.

Docks at public area are made to serve the purpose by those who don't use them.

An education is such an important tool to be without.

Re: Securing Boat To Dock (R C Day)

I have back spliced loops in the ends of a couple of short pieces of rope. I likethem a little longer than 3' becasue half the docks I tie to don't have cleats, but basically I have found a short piece of nylon rope is ideal.

Gonna try the short rope with loops thing too. The point of my idea is that whenever I am alone, I can launch, tie up, park the truck and then get in the boat and take off in about 3 minutes or less. Quick and simple
