    Starting Problem

This has happened a few times. Motor overall is running great. Will be out on the lake and go to take off for the next spot. Turn the key and hear the initial beep. Turn the key further to start and nothing. Absolutely nothing. Make sure it is in neutral. Hit tilt/trim and that works. Lights work, etc. This is only intermittent and does not happen all of the time.

Last time it happened, I tried to actually pull back on the key a little - as in trying to pull the key out of the ignition - and it fired right up. Whenever it happend again, I just put some outward pressure on the key and it fired right up. I don't know if maybe when I am trying to start the engine I am somehow pushing the key in causing problems or what.

Hopefully this makes sense. Again, this does not happen all the time. Not sure if this is something I should worry about or just leave it alone. Any ideas?

    Re: Starting Problem (sc419795)

From your description, it sounds like a bad keyswitch.

You would have to use a voltmeter on the yellow-red wire when turned to the START position to know for sure.

Do you have a bunch of keys or do-dads on your keyring that can damage the plastic switch while bouncing over the waves?

Replace the ignition switch with a BRP ignition switch.

No - it's the only key on the ring - I do have a 'floatie' on it but other than that, its the only key on the ring.

Fred - is the part number on the ignition switch 393301? How hard is this to install? I do have a parts catalog as well as a users manual and I cannot find it anywhere in these catalogs.

    Thanks Fred.

Steve - I'm seeing 0584600 for the switch and key assembly for a '93 in the online catalog... I'm in OB Accessories and then electrical in the drop down menu under parts.

Is your switch mounted on the dash?

    Re: Starting Problem (Tom G.)

Hey Tom. The switch is located on the side of the boat next to the rest of the taggle switches to control lights, bildge, est. The motor itself is a 92 - boat is a 93. I was all over the Evinrude parts site. Been in the "parts" section - not accessories. Let me go there also.

Thanks Tom. Hope you are doing well.

Old style ingition switch with the screw on type terminals is #508180. That should be good for Pre-1996 motors IF you have a separate kill switch that doesn't clip on over the switch.
