    I'm stumped...

Got a '93 FastStrike 175 (J175GLETG) that just doesn't want to start when I launch the boat. I adjusted the timing to the correct position and put in new plugs, power pack, and fuel filter in an attempt to solve my idling/starting problem. It idles great now if/when it runs, but just won't start at the lake when I first put in. If it eventually fires it's fine, but today it wouldn't fire what so ever. What could be the problem? Maybe the primer solenoid, coils, plug wires? I was hoping to get this fixed myself, but it might be time to head on back to the shop.

Is the exhaust port in the back under water when you try to start it? Back pressure could be the problem. Try trimming the motor up a bit and try it.

No, I have it trimmed so the motor is about level, maybe up just a little higher than that. Don't know if this makes a difference, but it'll start with the muffs on it at home no problem.

Sounds like a back pressure issue - have you verified that the upper exhaust housing is out of the water when launching? Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I had these issues, too, and found that the motor was too low when launching. I now leave the winch strap attached, back the boat in, and then release the tension on the strap, letting the boat level itself on the bunks. This allows the motor to lift enough to get the exhaust housing above the waterline.

I'll have to try that next time then. Hopefully that's the case.

    Re: I'm stumped... (THE WITCHDOCTOR)

It's definitely not back pressure. Went back and tried a whole range of trim levels. I pulled a spark plug just for the hell of it and noticed only oil, not much if any fuel. I don't know if it's the fuel pump or what, but it's headed to the shop tomorrow. I just don't have time to dig into it myself right now.
