    hello, wanting some imput.

hey all, just have a couple questions for you evinrude/johnson guys. i was always a mercury man and i am done with the mercury junk, tired of the unreliability. what years johnson/evinrude are the most reliable motors? what are the shortcomings? im looking to buy an older motor say between 1985 to 1995 that range. any help would be appreciated. thanks

Ive had and seen a lot of people with the 91 and up carb motors [intruders'] that has lasted and lasted I personally had a 93 150 for over 10 years and only put 1 power pack on it the last year I owned it, the 115 in that year and style are about the same except they get better fuel mileage, ,,Should be some more experienced boaters along to give their opinions

intruder/faststrike is the best they ever built. some had a casting flaw that leaked into #1 cylinder. if you had a v6 merc, either you or your mechanic weren't doing something right.

well since there is always constantly something wrong i dont blame the mechanic or myself i blame the manufacturer. parts failing with less than 140 hours has nothing to do with us, it has to do with merc using the cheapest parts they can get a hold of to put on their $20000 motors you might want to check the internet on all the problems people are having with optimaxs ( myself incleded) since you are high on them. last one i will own. i know all brands have certain problems that require repair but this merc is just rediculus. junk

Any of the Evinrude / Johnsons should be good as long as you stay away from the model years when OMC was going under. I am thinking maybe 98 to 2001 were the trouble years. Correct me if I am wrong. Anything from 2002 on you are also fine.

Any used engine condition will depend on how it was taken care of. Pretty much a crap shoot. Many boaters who say they take good care of engines use cheep oil and chemicals. Others depend on their dealer and that can be risky as well. A friend of mine noticed his 150 was running rough and had the motor checked at the lake by the local marina guy who we have know for many years. Motor takes 6 plugs right !! Well it had 6 plugs but (5) different types !!!!!!!!!!!

He no Longer deals with that business back home.
