    lower unit oil change

hi everyone. new to the forum and new to boat ownership. i have a 2000 johnson 150 carburated. there are 3 bolts in the lower unit that access the oil in the lower unit case. 2 large regular blade screws 1 top and 1 bottom, and there is also a phillips (4 way?) in btween those 2. my question is as i add the fluid from the bottom hole is the LU full when it comes out the middle hole ( with the 4 way screw ) or must it be filled until it comes out the top hole, or is there a specific amount that goes in.

    thanks for your help.

Hi and welcome to the BBC, what ever you do, DO NOT touch the phillips head screw in the lower unit, bad things will happen. You only need to remove the slotted screws to fill and drain your lower unit's fluid. Get a large aluminum pan from the grocery store and place it under the lower unit. Trim the motor up enough for you to remove the lower slotted screw and the upper slotted vent screw. Drain the lower unit fluid into the pan. You can get a fill pump kit from your local Evinrude dealer along with two 32 oz bottles of lower unit fluid. I would recommend Ultra HPF XR for your motor. You will need 33 oz to fill it. Trim the motor down until level then, screw the pump into the bottom drain hole after the fluid is completely drained. Pump the fluid into the lower unit until it comes out of the TOP vent hole. Give it a few more pumps and then install the top slotted plug.
Trim the motor back up so you can remove the pump and quickly screw in the bottom drain plug. You will loose just a small amount of fluid but that is fine.
While you are at the dealer getting the fluid and pump, pick up two fiber washers for the drain/fill plugs they only cost .85 each and will ensure a good seal of the lower. You will need a large screwdriver to remove and tighten them back up.

As long as nothing was shifted, touched or moved you should be OK that is the pinion bearing retaing screw. You should be OK but for future reference NEVER remove a phillips head screw from an OMC/BRP gearcase without consulting a manual.

thanks again for the reply and help. thankfully i didn't shift it or move it. i went ahead and took it to the shop for service they are going to service the water pump and inspect the upper bearing. the mechanic was a little concerned about my description of the metal on the plugs and the condition of the lower unit oil.

where is the best place to acquire a service manual. on my jet ski forum you can download one for free. anything like this or where would be the best place to purchase one.

    thanks again

You can order a service manual from your dealer or from http://www.shop.evinrude.com. Fine shavings are normal on the magnets, chunks are not.
