    93 Skeeter 200DX Restoration

Ok I am in the beggining of a restoration of my Skeeter. I have done one before many years ago, but not this detailed. I am going through the whole boat from one end to the other and repair or replace . I will be posting pictures as progress is made. I sure hope you guys can give ideas as am sure that I an unaware of the resources available now. Please feel free to comment and add your two cents.

    Here is the before pic.

I am going to work on it as I have time. I have started stripping the boat.

I have removed the motor and have popped the cap. I have found bondo in the transom, but it is not rotten or does it appear to have any damage.

Why would they do that ? I am unsure about the reason. I am going to have to dig a little further.
Here is a picture of making the last cuts before popping the cap.

So this is my monster project I have all the time to do it and will be working on it in between trips offshore, and an extended trip to a project. I am going to take the engine to Jay Smith Racing engines to add a little pep. If I am going all in might as well get it all.

Gonna be busy so I will not make much progress over the next week.

looks like a nice boat in the first pic. better look into the bondo transom thing. you sure the bondo (didnt see any in the pics) isnt just the glue that is used to hold the splashwell to the transom? be prepared for bad news and rotteness. been working on mine on the weekend, takes all week to get over the trauma of finding new damages..

if your going that far, why not check out the transom. i would hate to finish all that work just to find out the transom was overlooked and have to get back into it again weeks or even months later.

    Re: 93 Skeeter 200DX Restoration (bob o)

Yeah, I checked it again yesterday afternoon and it does appear to be glue. I checked the transom at the top and it was solid, I used a screwdriver in the bolt holes and it was solid. I guess I got lucky and do not have a major transon job to tackle. Their are some weak spots in the floor around the drain, and it will have to be replaced. The wires are bad througout the boat so those will all need to be replaced. I have just got into it so I am sure I will find more just have to give it a look over. I am building a frame to put the cap on and the hull on this weekend so I will be able to dig a little more after that. Thanks for the replies.
I am doing some mods to the boat as well, first it has the old style flasher in the bow and I am going to take that out and fill the hole, next I am going to add a livewell pumpout. I never have enjoyed having to fill bags under the boat, so that will fix that. I am adding bucket seats instead of the bench that is currently in it. I have alot of other plans and will post them as they come up.

If I were you I would go ahead and remove the cap and check out the stringers. If you got weak spots in the floor then odds are the foam is saturated with water and if it is, theres good chance the stringers have absorbed some of it. Also if its got a aluminum gas tank with foam poured around it I would pull it and check for holes and thin areas in the aluminum.

The cap is loose I am just waiting to build a frame to put it in. I will find out if the stringers are damaged when I cut the floor to replace. Thanks for the advise. Their is only a 2' x 2' area that is soft you think I should replace the whole floor or just repair what is damaged?

The gas tank is plastic so no issues other than a cleaning.

Most of the time the wood is only covered with fiberglass on the top and not the bottom. So when you pull the cap you will be able to see it from underneath. The wood could be damaged further out than the soft 2' x 2' and you just cant tell from the top. I would definately make sure I took a good look at the whole stringer system if I had gone as far as you have. Good luck with it and enjoy it as much as you can. It'll make it go by faster. You are definately about to learn alot about how a boat is built.

how did you the the cap off where it is attached in the middle (around the storage area and the consoles)? if I read it right its connected there also. Did you have to cut that area out?

Anywhere it met the floor in the console area it was screwed or tack nailed to the floor with resin coating over top. Whack it with a hammer a little and most of it pops off. Storage compartment in front deck was screwed and bondo'd to the hull. Pull the carpet out and saws-all around bottom sides. Reglass back together at bottom when its back together. Not sure how the box is on that 200DX though.

No worries Skeet, I did as you said above. Just cut with a sawzall the areas that are attached with fiberglass. This should be the front in the rod lockers and under the bench seat. It is fairly easy it just take a little hard work and ingenuity.I will be working on this soon again.
