Have not had to try either but I have heard that scissors will work and a set of hair clippers came to mind a while back if I had to trim the edges after a new installation. Good Luck!

I dont know what the BEST way is, but I just cut my carpet right at the edge...it didn't go over the sides because otherwise I would have had the same problem. My not be what you want to do, but, it actually looks pretty good and the lids shut tight, but not too tight

If you have just finished you may want to wait awhile for the carpet to compress. Mine loosened up after a couple of weeks.

You might want to try an putting some wood paint sticks in between the lids and the lip on the hull. Do this while the boat is not being used. I did this with my Ranger when I got a new center step and worked great. I could not open my lids unitil I had the paint sticks in to compress the carpet for about a week.

I've never heard of the paint sticks trick, but sounds pretty logical to me. I have always used hair clippers on mine. And, the lids will loosen up as the carpet compressed over time.
