    Carpet glue.......again !!!

I did a lot of research on BBC and with all the different comments, i'm not sure anymore !!!

Outdoor carpet glue, contact cement, 3M 77...

Most of guys used carpet glue on the deck and contact cement on the lids.

It's probably the best option ???

In Quebec, we don't have Weelwood, Henry or Roberts product...We have 3M and Lepage products.

Any other advice and suggestions would be very appreciated !!!

Contact cement on the lids and decks, Carpet glue on the floor. I use contact cement everywhere on mine but if I had to do it again I would use glue for the floor. I had a tough time aligning it around the console.

    Re: Carpet glue.......again !!! (T5PHIL)

I just redid my lids and used the 3M 90 Spray adhesive-get at home improvement store-worked great-its contact adhesive so spray both surfaces and wait a few minutes til its tacky enough to not transfer to your skin(using your knuckle to test)-then join two surfaces.Make SURE everything is where you want it when you do it cuz it wont be easy at all to move or slide once you set it.Do just top of lid first -let sit 5 min and then turn over and do sides and back.I was thinking about using the spray on my floor but after using it I could see what guys were talking about on other forumns saying to go with troweled glue instead.I'll be using glue on the floor and deck. Also maybe look into making a template for your floor, deck and even your first lid(to figure out how to cut corners-i made a modification to my cuts that worked out nice-i got the jist of it from other forumns on here showing how to make carpet cuts,etc...).A good template material is the felt like weed block you can buy off the roll at home depot. Its 6ft wide and only like $1.25ft.Very cheap. Its easy to draw on (sharpie) and to cut with scissors but heavy enuf to lay still for you. When you transfer to your final carpet,I would advise to cut the carpet out about a1/4in larger than you think you need to-all the way around.I was careful doing mine and cut directly on my tracing line but it ended up being a 1/4in OFF in places-as in, I cut the carpet too small.I was lucky enuf that my errors were in a spot behind my drivers seat where it wont be seen. The template process DOES just add one more thing to do,but its also nice not having to have to try to manipulate heavier carpet amongst you trying to figure measurements, make markings,etc...

I have used contact cement and liquid nails and both work excellent.

I am doing a small deck extension. The only two carpeted areas will be 43"X19" and 43"X13." Should I be just fine using 3M 90? I don't want to hijack but I had to ask. Thanks!

if you just have square /rectangle areas, maybe(???) go for it but keep in mind that you have to set that carpet down PERFECT/FIRST try and WONT BE ABLE TO SLIDE IT AT ALL,AND IF YOU FORCE SLIDE IT YOU RISK LOSING MOST OF YOUR ADHESION AND THEN YOU MIGHT HAVE A NASTY MESS TO WORK WITH TRYING TO RE-DO.-If you do use it-you might want to do half of each piece at a time-1.set carpet in place unglued-2.use non spraying hand to hold down THAT side(1/2) of carpet-do not budge at ALL-3.use what will be your spraying hand to pull up the free(un-held down) side of carpet(that you will be gluing)and peel it back so that your non spraying hand(fingers) can hold/pin it back-4.Now youve got the carpet perfectly held in place, one half peeled back and held, and one half of the deck ext exposed to spray your adhesive--5.spray exposed deck ext area and underside of carpet thats being peeled back and held)-wait for proper tackiness(follow directions on can),and then join the two surfaces.--6.Now,youve got one half perfectly glued and you no longer have to worry about carpet shifting and can easily manipulate/work on/glue other half of ext------i dont know if i would try to just spray both surface fully and try to lay it down in one shot.A lot of times lines match up good to start but the further you get its real easy to end up a 1/4 in OFF.Hope this helps some-------------OR,just go with troweled glue. They sell it in pretty small tubs.

during step 4 that i mentioned, you will be doing two things with your non spraying hand---1.holding entire carpet in place, and 2.holding the peeled back part(with a finger or two).-----If the peeled back part is large enuf it might peel back and lay in place(resting on your forearm and hand thats doin the holding) by itself-you just have to see what works for you when you get to it.

    Re: Carpet glue.......again !!! (burnsy42hydra)

funny-i just noticed i never really directly answered your original question-----the 3M 90 works great.I had never used a spray adhesive ever in my life before.I was surprised at how good it worked and held, even on the underside of lids where you have the stress of bending the carpet.-Just be careful what you get any residual on.When its freshly wet you can wipe away but after just a few seconds it will start to get tacky at which point you need something like min spirits ( or even carbeurator spray)to break it down and wipe away. Its not a messy job-just sayin...

    Re: Carpet glue.......again !!! (luke1wcu)

I am finishing up a 19"X43" deck extension and plan on using contact cement for the carpet. The thing is, the carpet is not carpet but felt backed marine grade vinyl. It matches what I have and I really like the fact that its easy to maintain. My question is, will I have issues with contact cement not drying due to a lack of air getting under the vinyl? Does it require airflow to cure? I'm pretty sure the vinyl will be air tight even though it is felt backed. Also wondering whether I should go with 3M 90 or Weldwood.

after using the 3M 90-seems to me that it would work but youre probably better served to just contact the maker of the vinyl, explain your situation, and see what adhesive they'd reccomend as far as curing,etc...-----Find what city theyre in and call information(411)-you can probably talk to someone on the phone and get the best answer within minutes instead of waiting for a return email from someone................
