    2004 evinrude burning oil

    model E200FPXSRB
    serial 05038802
my 2004 evinrude DFI has started to use excessive oil. my rough calculation is 33:1. i have always used XD50 until this year now I ran the tank low and filled with xd100, not that low that there is air in the system as the bulb is full and tight.
I do not see any mechanical linkage that leads me to believe the oil feed is all electronically controlled. I do not have any check engine lamp or oil pressure alarms. The engine sounds good and seeing it is low smoke low odor it looks and smells good as well. I do seem to have some oil coming out the pan but I believe it is from the air intake when tilted up due to the excessive oil. This site is fantastic as most everything I know about outboards I have learned here without having to post very often.
Anybody have any ideas of what I can check myself as I have it booked into my dealer in 2 and a half weeks.

I recently had the same problem. Seen oil on the LU and began searching. I have a 2000 200 FICHT. Dont know if these are the same set up. On the driver side oil pump I found the return oil line was not secured very well. I suspect I had a little dripthere. Not a machanic either but you are rite these guys are a big help. I have learned a lot here too.

Oil consumption is determined by the engine computer depending on the rpm and throttle opening.

Most of the time excessive oil use is from a pinched oil return line, oil pressure regulator bad, pinhole in oil pump diaphragm, or an internally leaking oil injector. A dealer can troubleshoot these fairly easily or you can with a few tools, pressure gauge and a service manual.

i have my boat and motor at the dealer and they have done all there checks and have found nothing out of the ordinary, everything checks out fine. I have owned this motor since 05 and I know it is burning more oil. They asked me to change back to xd50 to see if my oil consumption lessens. I do not doubt my dealer at all, they have the diagnostic equipment and the specs from the manual. They have contacted BRP on my behalf and there were no service bulletins or complaints that they were aware of. They agreed with changing back to xd50 as well
My question is has anybody else experienced more oil consumption when changing from xd50 to xd100 in their dfi motors?
I will change back to xd 50 and will post my results after I run for a while to make an accurate measurement.

maybe i am missing something here, but how would switching oil cause the motor to use less?

On an etec, where they can change the setting, then yes, but on a DI i don't see how it would make any diffference at all. I think i would look for someone else to work on it

My 04 225 HO seems to be at about 25.1, I figure little extra can't hurt near as bad as too little can.
