Hey there. I'm the proud new owner of an old bass boat. It's an 89 Bass Tracker 1800 TF with a 150 blackmax. I got it super cheap knowing it needs work. The main floor is solid as a rock, but the casting deck is soft as are the bottoms of the front storage compartments. For now I'm not too concerned with the storage as those are not load bearing but I think I want to replace the casting deck.
I'm no stranger to fiberglass work. I've been building custom car audio systems for years and we make a lot of glass stuff. My question is about the construction.
I can see the bottom of the deck from underneath looking in the center storage compartment. I see there is obviously a layer of glass on the bottom. Then plywood and I assume more glass on top. My first thought is to pull the carpet, chip out the plywood but leave the layer of glass. Saturate the existing glass with resin and maybe a layer of mat. Then put the ply down on that and glass over the top of it all. Only problem I see with this method is the introduction of voids between the bottom of the ply and the existing glass.
Other option is to cut the whole thing out. Do you then glass the bottom of the ply before you set it down and then glass the top in? How do you support the edges and leave that perfect gap for the carpet to tuck into?
I've never done this before (obviously) and I just was wondering what the procedure is. Thanks!
