    Bunk Carpet & Contact Cement

I have search and read, but I want to confirm this. I am replacing the bunks on my ranger trailer fenders. I have got the wood cut out of pressure treated, I sanded the cornes to make it easier to pull the carpet over and not tear. Tonight I started to use contact cement to glue the carpet. I spread glue on the board, then TRIED to spread glue on the carpet, waited until it was "dry" and stuck it together pressing firm. I did one half at a time. I used an entire pint of contact cement on just one board, but it doesn't seem to be holding well. I have the board laying carpet side down and weighted, did I screw up some where? Should I have used carpet glue instead?

    Thanx for the help

It's difficult to adhere to pressure treated wood but you did it correctly. Probably could have used a little less glue but either way, you need to get stainless staples and staple the carpet down on the BOTTOM of the board ONLY. Right where the ends of the carpet fold under the board. The staples hold the carpet tight around the board, the glue just gives a little extra stickyness and keeps the carpet from shifting on the board.
With the glue side (top of the bunk where the boat will sit) semi attached and facing down, as you fold your ends back and around the bottom of the bunk, just go along the bottom ends of the carpet and staple along the entire length while holding it tight.

It's early and my coffee hasn't kicked in yet......................hope this helps.

Treated plywood has a lot of moisture in it even after it's dried. Sometimes it's hard for the glue to set up because it seems to pull the moisture to the surface. I used Wellwood exterior glue on mine and let them dry for 48 hours before I put them back on. Worked excellent.

Hmm..should have thought about that before..o'well..finished lastnight...I let the contact cement dry completely before I put them together..seemed to stick better..that and enough stainless stables..we will see...How long should I wait before I take the boat out?
