I have a spot on one of my trailor fenders that hit another trailer a while back. I'm interested in repairing it. A new fender is $500-800 and a repair shop was at least $300. The spot involves a corner of the fender.(I'll add some pics as soon as I can) Should I even try to fix it? We're talking about a spot probably 2 x8 inches. Any suggestions for a novice at fiberglass repair?
Heres how to fix, remove fender.
scrub the insides, hose pipe,soap and stiff brush until its clean.
let it dry and start grinding or power sand until you can see fresh glass weave,
flush and wipe down with acetone.
apply a glass platch with poly resin and glass mat, I'd use 2 layers.
Let the resin set.
Flip it over and sand the exterior , spray gel or paint.
repairs to glass are generally done to the inside, same with a boat hull.
the exterior is mostly cosmetics and finish work.
if you go ahead, mix up some test batches of resin first to get a feel for working with polyester resin, measure accurately, wear silicone gloves! use cheapo 90 cent disposeable brushes and keep resin batches small to keep it under control.
a cup of resin should do the trick, its better to mix additional batches than one big batch unless you are familiar with how the stuff works.
Use unwaxed resin from a marine supply.

Thanks for the info! It looks like there are a few different types of fiberglass cloth. I wonder if one is better than any of the others for this.
