    Good Bilge Cleaner

Anyone have any suggestions what I can try to get all the oily, grungy residue out of my bilge area? It's on everything...boat, pumps, wires, etc.
Everything is working fine, it's just really dirty

there was a damned entertaining thread on the Lounge last week about a bar of soap dropped in the bilge. Went on for something like 5 pages.

    Re: Good Bilge Cleaner (Mantis)

I used something from West Marine that worked OK. I think it was 32 ounces, something like Starbrite. Anyway, I put it in the bilge (all of it) and added water from the hose. Then I drove it around town (behind my Yukon) and ran some errands, letting it swish around and get on everything. Then I parked it on my driveway and drained it out. Smells much better.

As for the Simple Green, I am new to this stuff, but just bought a jug of it at Walmart. I used it in my pressure washer to clean the garage floor and it made the garage smell great (minty?) for over a week. I plan to use SG from now on every time I do the bilge. Later, bassoneer.

Sorry...one more thing about Simple Green. It is a degreaser and will get the gunk off a concrete floor (or out of a bilge) but also drys out your hands like they were in paint thinner. I would avoid splashing around in it too much...I ended up having to use my wife's hand lotion because it dried out my skin. Good stuff though, just nice and strong.

    Re: Good Bilge Cleaner (lakefolk)

If I remember correctly Simple Green is not good for aluminum components. I know that I saw a military spec sheet on that somewhere. I've used it in my bilge before and it works fine, but I don't think that I would run it through my pressure washer unless approved by the manufacturer of the washer. Many units have seals made of different materials, such as EPDM, Viton, TFE, etc. Simple Green may or may not be compatible with them. I'll see if I can find the link regarding Simple Green and aluminum corrosion.
