Transom Plate

Please help I am going to plate the transom on my 1984 Skeeter Starfire 175. I have a 175 yamaha with a jack plate. I just bought the boat and can't afford to put a new transom on it. PLEASE help with advise. Thanks Pat

If the transom is bad you should really not operate the boat. Running the boat at speed and during take off is very stressful on the transom. I totally replaced the transom in my Skeeter for less than a $1000. Check out the rebuild posts at the top of the page to get some ideas of how its done. If you insist on operating the boat with a bad transom, TAKE THE J/P OFF! I know you want to go fish but it will be better if you repair the boat correctly. I know, I've been there done that. I know none of this is what you wanted to hear, but temperary fixes are not the way to go.

The top and the bottom are very solid. The motor was replaced 6 years ago and it feels like the guy didn't set it up very well but when I get it off the boat I will see.

The guys are right. All it takes it to hit the throttle too hard on launch and or hit a hard wake and your motor will be at the bottom. It is not impossible to replace the transom. It takes time and it will be good as new.

Good choice.

I hate seeing people do the redneck plate. Any plate on the back doesn't add anything to the transom. All it does is give a false sense of security. When the transom finally rots out, the only thing holding the plate on the boat is the 1/8th inch of fiberglass on the outer hull. That isn't enough. I see more damage done by plates than anything. And when they do break, it is catastrophic to the boat. What was a decent repair prior, is a major, major repair after the plate fails.
