    Transom Questions

I recently accuired a 89 dynatrak 160 fiberglass boat, the transom on the left side has a crack and there is a little movement on the left side. its not rotten i dont believe. Is there a way to strengthen this or is replacing the whole transom the only option?

I saw a boat one time that had some all-thread rods and steel plates anyone familier with this? If not does anyone have an estimate of what it would cost to fix it if done by myself?

I have seen transoms with threaded rods through it. In fact the project boat i bought had a alum. plate on the outer transom skin and was attached 3"s inside the splashwell. I decided it had some issues and have removed the top cap and am rebuilding the stringers, floor, and transom. I'm sure some will say you can do that but do you want to be running down the river one day and hit floating debris and then feel a thump and have the motor flip forward and could potentially kill you or others in the boat not to mention the motor sinking to the bottom. Not trying to be graphic on here but im sure others will agree either replace the transom or get another boat. It's not worth the risk.

Yeah jav what you said makes since but there is very little flex and the boat tops out at 28mph.

    G is right...

And it is rotten if it is flexing.

And its only going to get worse..

And there is no set method of tacking aluminum panels onto the boat since its a patch job at best...

do some investigation first. drill some hole into the transom wood and see what come out. is it wet or rotten. then deside what to do. depending on the boat is a easy to hard fix. picture would help.

    X2...

I wouldnt be so quick to call it junk, unless you are the type that just does NOT want to do it, which is understandable.

And like Rob says, punch some holes in it, see if its rotten... if it is rotten, you didnt lose anything. If it isnt rotten, its not the hardest thing to repair the holes.

    Re: Transom Questions (boostedone)

I dont have a way to post pics or i would like i said in previous posts it is cracked in the very top left corner i tapped on it and i didnt find any soft spots and all of the flex/movement is in the left corner. I actually would like to re-do an older boat but i would prefer it to be something a little bigger, i just thought i could fix this one up a litttle and maybe make a few dollars toward my project boat.
