    Transom Material

I'm looking at a 1982 Bass Tracker III, and I noticed the transom wood is pretty well rotted. I know if I get this boat, I'll have to replace the wood. What type of wood is used and how can I tell the thickness. Should I go back with wood or a synthetic material (if there is even one available)?

The tracker company used solid aluminum rivets and I figure I'll need to go back with the same type. Exactly what kind are they and are there any alternatives? Also, how do I re-rivet them (especailly in the hard to reach places)? ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL BE GREATLY APPERICATED

I don't know of any synthetic material for aluminum boats as most cores used today need fiberglass skins for strength. As far as thickness, you'll have to break out the measuring tape for that. Once you find out the thickness, get a sheet of marine grade plywood. I wouldn't use the pressure treated stuff from Home Cheapo. The marine ply is made with fewer voids and better glues. Cut the wood to the right size then coat it with thinned epoxy resin until it is good and saturated. Some of the other guys on here would have an idea of the best brand and I'm sure they will be along to post soon. Mount it when cured and make sure to seal all holes you drill with some 5200.
Post some before and after pics when you get a chance.

Where can a guy get a sheet of marine plywood? Should I use the Git Rot as the thinned epoxy?

as far as marine grade plywood you can buy it at the lumber yards.....If you could find it greenwood is the way to go but it is not allowed to be sold to lumber yards i don't think (it is 100 year no rot plywood) as for the rivets they are call bucking rivets they are 2 piece rivets. not sure on your boat but it probably has a 1 1/2" transom in it.... like perfect storm said if you coat it with epoxy resin good and let it soak it up good especailly on the cut ends it will be in there along time!
