Gel Coat and Carpet looking shabby!

Hey Guys, My gel coat and carpet are both looking pretty durn shabby. Just bought the boat after it had been sitting for over a year. The outside of the boat looks pretty good, but the gel coat on the inside is pretty bad. I've read in this forum to wet sand it, but is that all you have to do or do you have to put more gel coat on as well? I'm ripping the carpet up very soon. Any suggestions on the type and grade of carpet I should put in?

Smoot- Try a little compound with a wool buffing pad first. If this doesn't remove the oxidation then do a little reading here about wet sanding. You really don't need to worry about gel-coating. If the carpets comming out your really don't need to worry about cleaning up the mess. Have fun and set aside plenty of time.

Hey Smoot, On the wet sanding, I did my boat last year and it looks like new now. I started with 800 grit then 1000 and finished it up with 2000. I have a lorge air compressor and used an air driven rotory sander. It worked sweet!!

Will get an after picture soon.

Agree at this point white compound is 2000 red is 1500
I would get a good electric buffer NOT a polisher and do the worst looking part first and see if it cleans up and shines.....you will need to use at least 20OZ. carpet
you can use heavier stuff but alot of times it makes the lids to tight and hard to close
