Need advice on bringing the boat back to life

Newbie to the board.. I have a 1980 Ranger 1780V w/ a 115 Evinrude. I just recently brought it from the grave. It has sit out in the weather for about 3-4 years now. I replaced the seats and carpet. Al I have to do now is the gelcoat.
The color is not faded bad at all, it just feels like 400 grit sand paper. I did a search and found that a few guys said to wet sand w/2000 paper and then polish, others said that it needs to be re-coated.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated..

    Cp

Do you mean you can actually feel the metalflake in the gel? If so, sanding won't do much good as there's virtually no gel left to sand. You might consider a product called Vertglas. I've not used it yet but is supposedly works pretty good but that's only temporary. If you're down to the flake you'll need to look at re-gelling the surface.

I just finished up sanding part of the bow with some 2000 on a block sander (man it's hot out there) and got it smoothed down to a gloss like finish. I'm wondering if I move down to a 1500 or 1000 if it would hurt it any.
I don't think it's down to the flake, because it's starting to smooth up and get the darkness back in the color.

moving down in paper will not hurt just remember you are taking alot more off and will require more buffing and compound to bring the shine back....I would wet sand it with 1200 and buff with 2000 grit compound and take a look!
