    Hull repair question

Hi guys, new to the site.

I've added an extension to my existing front casting deck, I can't seem to locate the before and after pictures right now but when i find them I'll post them.

Anyway, I was fishing Erie last fall and on my way back to the launch, the sun was in my eyes and we were trying to make it back before sunset. Ended up motoring over a rock shoal. Damaged the hull down to the fibreglass, my neighbour helped me repair the damage but it wasn't sanded and I didn't put on the gel coat yet.

I was anxious to bring the boat back on the water to see how the repair held up. Seemed to be fine except for one thing, when I am just putting along I can read bottom, but as soon as I even touch the throttle my readings get all scewed up My transducer is epoxied onto the inside bottom of the boat, could it be that because the repair job hasn't been sanded yet it is causing turbulence and bubbles which in turn is causing all the screwed up readings on my finder? If not maybe I should just take it to get it repaired by a fibreglass repair guy.

Any opinions or comments would be appreciated. Thanks

    Harry

    Re: Hull repair question (fishnfreak)

    Harry,

I also had to make a repair to my hull. It was on the side of the running pad, just behind the driver's seat.

I tried a couple of things that did not work well, and eventually, I had to do some sanding, and then use 3 layers of fiberglass mat and resin, making each piece slightly larger then the previous one. Once this was on and dry, I added 3 layers of marine epoxy paint. I allowed each coat to dry for 24 hours, then sanded it, and added the next coat, repeating the process.

Now the bottom is slick and strong. The repair does not match the hull exactly as I used gray paint, and have a pearl with silver flake hull. I could take it to someone to have the gelcoat reapplied but it is costly.

Re: Hull repair question (Bass Hawk 87)

If the repair is inline with the transducer yes that could very well be your problem .
any turbulance around it will cause erratic readings
