Model # vs. Title : production year confusion & questions

Just curious if anyone can help explain why my motor title says it's a 1990, but the motor model # says it's a 1988? I'm confused as to how that is exactly. Any ideas? I've been researching on 1990 models, but going off the actual motor badge - it looks like this engine is a 1988. Trying to find out positively before ordering a manual.

maybe it was a new 88 motor sold in 1990.

your model number indicates an '88, regardless of when it was sold, it was still made in 88 and be aged accordingly.
