    Susquehanna navigation

Are they any safe spots on the Susquehanna to be able to navigate in a bass boat? I'm most interested in the area from Harrisburg towards the Bay.

The area right at HBG has boating capabilities but is much better suited to pontoon and tin boats with jets.

The next area closest to HBG is Lake Frederick; you launch from the town of Goldsboro about 10 miles south. Average depth there is probably 6' to 7' with some spots going 10'. There are many other spots that are 3' to 4', and there are many rocks. I ran there more this summer than before and didn't ding anything, but eventually you will tangle with something. Nice ramps and plenty of parking.

Farther south is Lake Clarke, commonly called Long Level which is below route 30 at Wrightsville. This is a larger impoundment about 10 miles long and about 7400 acres. Much of the lake is over 15' deep with many areas going over 35'. If you head north you will eventually run into rocks but I feel safe in most areas. Unfortunately parking is a zoo unless you are there very early.

There are two more pools farther south, Lake Aldred and the Conowingo Pool. Both are suitable for a glass boat, but I have not been to either. I believe they are similar to Lake Clarke in size and depth. About 2 hours west is Raystown which some love and some hate. Gasoline prices for the tow vehicle this past summer kept me closer to home.

The best fishing around HBG can not be done with a glass bass boat. The best rig is a tin rig with a jet. My wife actually thinks I should get a jon boat to get into those spots. I have my boat because a rig for the Susky is almost useless elsewhere.

    Re: Susquehanna navigation (zelmo)

Zelmo, thanks so much for the great information. Gives me something to look into come spring time!
It's been very frustrating to say the least having that big body of water so close and being afraid of trashing the boat. I moved from the Raleigh, NC area and had plenty of places to fish close by.

    Thank you again!!

    Eric

You need to come on down to the Maryland Rally, launching at Anchor Marine........a 5- 10 minute ride from Havre de Grace on the Susky.

Sounds tempting, I'll have to look into it a little bit. It's only 90 miles to the ramp from my house...............
