"the basin" winter harbor lake winni.....

Any one have any thoughts on this spot. Went there on Saturday during a tourny, it was absolutely loaded with bait. I am not kidding here, bait of many species and sizes. Unfortunely it was NOT loaded with bass, at least none that I could find. I must of caught 30 pickerel, but not one bass. The only bass I saw was chasing down a pickerel that I had on the line that bit a senko that i was working like a fluke(I didn't have any flukes). After 3.5 hours i had to bail out of there Was I doing something wrong? Maybe just bad timing? If anyone have any insight on this or any other shallow water weedy areas that might be holding quality fish as this time I would love the help since I have another tourney out of back bay in two weeks.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

The Basin has always looked to be the best place on earth to bass fish. I have done lousey there every time in there. I go there every now and then mostly cus I cant belive it will stay lousey. I did see one of the biggest bass I'v ever seen in there, it was early spring, must have been 10 lbs or better. You mite try staying in back bay for a while, have done good in there. You mite try running across to the Varney Islands and go left up into thoes bays. I forget the names of them. Good luck.

That area gets hammered. It does look great, for sure though. In my opinion you spent way too much time in there if you weren't catching fish...not trying to be a jerk at all..it's not like you would have left fish to catch fish, but you spent almost half your time in an area that didn't produce. The Basin is an enclosed area, it is not like the fish rotate in and out of there...you should have bailed after an hour. Winni is too big to stay in one area too long if it is not producing. Just my opinion, hope it helps. Good luck next time. Contact nhbass, he'll go out and show you some areas around there.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's that used to be my favorite area of Winni to fish. I lived in Mass then and fished Mass clubs and I fished Winni more then as opposed to now when I live in NH. Anyway, myself and a lot of guys I know fished there often and we took a lot of those fish to weigh-ins that were far away. Maybe a lot of them didn't make it back. I have caught a few largemouth out of there that were over 5lbs but the last few times I was there it was dead. I've pretty much given up on it.

We rented a camp in there a few years back for a couple of weeks. The place loooks great with weed beds and kind of a bowl shape. We did nothing in there for 2 years in a row. One of the neighbors did pull up what looked to be a 5 lb LM. Caught it near the marker that is about 3/4 of the way across if you take a left when you clear the no wake.

Thanks for all the info guys. I guess I will be staying away from there for now on. I am planning on getting out there Saturday for some more pre fishing, hoping to put something together for next weekend.

    Thanks again,
    Kevin
