    Rock Bass

I have seen Rock Bass referenced here a few times, what exactly are they? Not sure I have seen any. I originally thought it was Crappie you guys were talking about.

    Re: Rock Bass (RG-IN-NH)

Unless I'm mistaken, they look almost the same as a smallmouth, without the black lines on it. Red eyes, and very small, I think the state record is just over 1 pound. Their might be other distinctions between the two, but I think that's pretty much it. I haven't caught one in years.

Yup, I was way off the mark.

My buddy and I caught about 10 of those little bastards on Spofford last Sunday.

I do not recommend catch and release with these fish. These guys are prolific and will do a pretty good job destroying a bass fishery. I kill every one that I catch. It looks like they have done a pretty good job ruining Fay's Marina and Smith Cove up on Winni. I caught about 50 of them up there.

The crappie have almost a paper thin larger mouth also where the rock bass have a mouth like a sunfish.

    Re: Rock Bass (cyclone70)

Thanks, that's what I suspected. I caught what I thought was a Crappie on a crankbait but was surprised the mouth didn't rip--probably because it was a rock bass.
