What makes it a "Faststrike" anyway?

A friend and I are trying to figure out what exactly makes the Johnson Faststrike motors so fast....? I was hoping to find an explanation of what exactly are the technological differences that separate these motors from others, and seem to make them faster than other motors of equal horsepower?

My buddy has a '95 Faststrike 115 on his 17' Ranger that completely outruns my '97 Merc 115 on the same hull. What is it about these motors that make them so fast?

    60-degree V?
    Loop-charged?

    Thanks!

The Intruder & Faststrike motors made their debut in 1991. Incredible engines & still exist today as 60 degree E-Tecs from 115hp V4 thru to the V6 200hp.
In 2009 the V4 will be available as a 115HO & 130hp which I am sure are going to turn quite a few heads. Below are the 1991 brochures which will give you an overview of the beginnings of one of the greatest Outboard Motors ever conceived.

Click on the pictures & follow the prompts on the right. All the brochures are there as well so you can follow the history of these amazing motor platform through to present day.

Those motors were the "H.O.'s" of their day. Depending on the year and model, most used larger carbs and had different heads, porting, etc. than the consumer models of the same hp. Some also had harder mounts and different gearcases.

The 150 FastStrike and Intruders were the best know because back then the Bass tournaments were limited to 150hp motors.

So, if I have a '99 Model 150PLEES motor, does it have any of the characteristics of the Intruder or Faststrike? Is it one or the other only having lost the marketing name?

Be careful, I asked a similar question and the answer I got was about $1000 dollars.

Re: What makes it a "Faststrike" anyway? (ChampioNman)

Thanks for all the great info!

So how about this one: I was recently looking at a Ranger 462 from 1997. The motor cowling says "Johnson Ficht Faststrike 150". What exactly does that mean? Is that some predecessor to the Ficht "ram injected" high-pressure 2-strokes that have such a notorious reputation? It says this is a fuel-injected motor, but that's about all I know about it. Would this motor fall into the category of those "bad" Ficht engines I heard about that one should avoid when looking at used boats?

    Thanks!

The early Intruders were called the Yammie killers, till someone cried foul and if people took 'em back for service they got detuned somewhat. Those that didn't go back are still "Killer" engines!! Or so I was told .............

besides regular maintainence, only thing ever done to my motor in 23 years is to have the starter rebuilt. and you can cull me out anytime you like, LOL!!!!

Have a 92 150 Intruder and on the dyno it had right around 170 hp. The motor isn't very big to the eye, but it will haul ass!
