    need compression readings on a 89 200XP

I`m checking out a 89 RudeXP 89 model. I did a compression check and it`s only pulling 75lbs of compression on allthe clyinders. That scares me. They are all even but 75 sounds real low. It has a hour meter that reads 780 hours. I don`t think the motor has ever been cracked open. What do you all think?

I would do a decarb and then recheck the compression. May need new rings and a hone job.

I agree with doing a decarb and recheck the compression, also try another compression gauge. At its best, that motor is not going to read over 90 lbs. The best news is "ALL" of the cylinders are reading the same.

    Good luck and best regards,

It's possible that the compression gauge is not accurate and that the battery/starter is not cranking the motor over fast enough.

Try the compression again with a known accurate gauge, make sure the battery is well charged, and the cables and connections are in good shape.

On my 91 I only got 86psi across the board. Follow Seahorse advice to try and get a more accurate reading.

    Re: need

im not sure if that is the motor but it might be a low compression motor the main thing is all are even un less it goes down to 60 psi like the others said do a decarb if you need to have it honed and new rings i can do it for you for 650 i was told that it wa not good to do that because the pistons make an egg like shape and adding new rings would not fill in the egg shape pattern the other ones made i just did my 1988 150 jhonson gt and i have 90 psi on all cylinders cant really remember what they were before took it apart im sure they were close took it apart my block had a leak in it so i decided to hone it and add new rings it pushes my 18 foot ventura 63 mph with a 24 raker works for me but find out if thats really ok to do that i hear yes and no ive even read in a org omc book for a 50 hp to re hone and add new rings even if nothing is wrong if your going in side of it mightest well do that
