Planning on making a trip the first week in April to Lake Eufaula. Does anyone have and tips on types and colors of lures and recommended areas to fish?

    Great time to go!
I can highly recommend staying at Lakepoint.

If you put in a Lakepoint, you want to hang left staying in the Wildlife Refuge. Be sure you follow the creek channel markers or you will regret it. Hang another left after the second island. This place is called the Eagle's Nest. Shoot up this creek and you will have no problems finding big fish. The folks at the marina might be able to give you better directions, but I don't think you will have any problems finding it. I recommend red spinnerbaits and pumkin finese worms. Be careful and watch out for HUGE gators!

You will love this lake and you will find out why this lake is nicknamed the bass capital of the world. This is also a great crappie lake. Go the docks behind the motel at night and bring you a few dozen minnows. You will be surprised how quick you will catch your limit.

I bet this trip becomes an annual one for you like it did for me 15 years ago.

    Good luck!

Re: Trip to Lake Eufaula 1rst week in April (icemanrrc)

Actually my son and I, as well as my brother and dad have been going down to Eufaula AL for the last several years too. We have learned a few good spots through the years but I was just looking for any new info from folks like you. Although we have been going each year for the last several years, it really is hard to learn much about the lake when you only fish it one week per year. Lakepoint is a beautiful place. We love it. When you say hang a left when coming out of the Marina, do you mean left as if you were heading out towards the main lake? We have fished quite a bit to the right (going underneath the bridge) and up Cowikee Creek but we never have really caught much in that direction. The locals seem to always suggest going way back into the creeks in the spring, but we have just not had any luck doing that. The water clarity is always terrible back in the creek as compared to out on the main lake. We must just not have been fishing the right structure or something. So you guys have done well with red spinner baits? We have done fairly well in the past using white spinner baits with tandem blades and also crankbaits. Do you use tandem blades on your spinners? We'll check out the crappie as well per your suggestion. We tried fishing for Crappie a couple of years ago back up in the creek but we did not have much luck. I think the weather was a factor. What time of year do you guys go down?

    Thanks for the info

Yes, towards the main lake. I haven't had much luck to right (going under the bridge).

In the Spring the back of the creeks is where it's at! I fish with a 3/8oz red spinnerbait with a tandem colorado/willow blades.

We usually go down in April, but this year we are going in the 3rd weekend in May.

The eagle's nest is also a great place for crappie.

The one day I left my camera in my truck, I bet we saw four gators over 12-13 feet long, and one that had to be over 20 feet long (no kidding). The locals have a name for that granddady gator, but I can't remember what it is.

I live about 2 hours away from Eufaula. What I like about it is not only the fishing; but you feel like you are in another world yet only a couple of hours away. The town in real nice filled with good ol' down to earth folks and great places to eat. By the way.....Where do ya'll usually eat when you are down there? I can recommend two great places. If you like mexican, Old Mexico is one of the best mexican resturants I have ever eaten at. They have moved from their on the town square spot to further down the road. Get there early, or you will have to wait a loooooooooong time. If you like Catfish, I highly recommend the Anchor Inn. Locals own and operate it. Every thing is made fresh from family recipes including their salad dressings. All you can eat catfish with sides and salad bar I think is only $7.99. You can choose whole or fillet. This is by far the best catfish I have ever had. What I like the best about it is that it is not greasy at all. Most places that have all you can eat, leave a lot of grease causing me to feel really sick. You will want to get there early as well.

Re: Trip to Lake Eufaula 1rst week in April (icemanrrc)

Hello Icemanrrc. As my son and I along with my father, uncle and cousin plan our annual trip to Eufaula, I could not help but remember this post from a couple of years back. We are going down again the week of April 7th (spring break week for our kids). We went back in April of 2007 as well and like to have frozen to death the first part of the week. I sure hope the weather holds out for us this year as it is no fun when it's cold. We caught some fish last year althought the largest was around 4lbs. The first part of the week was pretty tough fishing due to the cold front but it got better as the week went on. The spot you were telling me about in this original post called the Eagles nest, is it by chance Bustahachee Creek? We did not try there last year because we never can tell exactly where the creek winds into the cove from the main lake. The last time we tried it was in my old Winner Bass Boat and we clipped something with my prop and lower unit. I now have a new Triton and I am a little skeptical about taking her into that area. I do have a GPS now which might help follow the creek channel.  I know the area always looked really good back in there but we never had much luck. Seems like there were always quite a few boats back in there which probably made it tough fishing. Are you guyst going again this year? Â

Week of the 7th will be good, and fishing during the week will be highly suggested. There is a Bass weekend series event on the 12th, so look for boat traffic to begin picking up as the week goes on, especially on friday.

Thanks for the info.We have come to realize that it's almost impossible to go to Eufaula for a week in the spring and not be there during some tournament or another. Lakepoint really get's hectic during tournament times.   We are really looking forward to getting back on the water down there.thanks again, Â

    Bomber,
Iceman left for Eufaula this afternoon (I think). I'll be heading there tomorrow night. Any advice to pass on besides the above?

Re: Trip to Lake Eufaula 1rst week in April (Digital1)

Hi Digital 1, If you see or talk to Iceman tell him I said hello. We have been going down to Eufaula in the spring each year for several years now. Sometimes we catch a few and other times it's a little slow. I think the weather is the largest factor coupled with the lake level. Last year when we went down, the lake level was lower than it normally is in the spring, so as you can imagine, it really messed us up due to lots of areas we liked to fish were very shallow. As far as advice, our best luck has been off of tandem blade spinners fished really slow around structure i.e., logs, rocks etc. It has been a bit frustrating to us becuase what worked one year doesn't seem to work the next. Last year the first half of the week was really cold becuase a cold front had just passed through the day of our arrival. Needless to say, we like to have froze to death !!!!! The fishing picked up a little later on in the week when the weather was more stable. Overall, our best fishing seems to be out on the main lake. We have tried to fish back up in the creeks where the locals say to go this time of year, but we just have not had any luck at all, and we have spent many hours in those creeks. We obviously are not doing something right. If you have any advice about creek fishing there in Eufaula, I would sure appreciate it. Good luck. Let me know how you guys do.
    thanks
