Dobyns Rod ? for all the Dobyns guys out there.

I am looking to add another Dobyns rod to my arsenal for next year. I am looking for a rod to focus on throwing bottom baits (T-Rigs and Jigs). I am looking into going with either a Champion 735c or either the DX 744 or DX745. I currently own a Champion 734c which I use for spinnerbaits and blade baits. The rod is rated as Heavy but is way too soft for me to use on bottom baits. Will the DX744 have a similar action as the 734C? Or do I need to go up a power to the 735C (Xtra fast) or DX745(Fast)? Input from owners of those rods I listed would be great.
    Thanks,
    Jordan

i have both the dx744 and dx745, what kind of structure are you planning on fishing 'em?

the dx744 is by far the most verstile

    Re: (thukidad)

i have the champion 734 and i use it mostly for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, small swimbaits such as paddle tails senkos in heavy grass ect. dont get me wrong i use to use it for jigs and texas rigs and worked fine. I have two dx 745s and they are awesome football jig rods. I would use a 745 for heavier jig applications but your best bet is the 744 probably the most versatile out of the rods. the 744 will throw your lighter stuff as well as somewhat heavy jigs and t rigs without a problem i would get the 744.

    Re: (Revofisher)

I plan on using it for multi purpose bottom fishing either in the weeds or rock. I do not want to get a dx744 if the action is the same as my 734c. I rarely use 1/4 oz weights and will be using 3/8 to 1 oz jigs and tungsten. Which rod would best suit my needs? The 735c, dx744 or the dx745? Or should I be checking out a different model altogether?
    Thanks guys!

If you're gonna be throwing 1 oz jigs plus a trailer, I think that would be pushing the limits of the DX744. I would get the DX745, as it is rated up to 1 1/2 oz. I have been throwing a carolina rig on my DX745 with a 1 oz weight and it handles it fine. While I do not fish many jigs, my 745 pulls double and triple duty pitching light cover and even throwing frogs and skinny dippers with no problems.

I own both the 744/745 and agree with previous replies. If your looking to throw heavier weights 1/2oz up I would suggest the 745. I have thrown 1/2oz football heads on the 744 and works just fine but prefer the 745. You might also consider the DX 784 C ML.

I would go with the 745 if you are going 3/4 and above. Depending on your lengths you like...I would look at the dx795 also.

Re: Dobyns Rod ? for all the Dobyns guys out there. (wreckingballs)

Action on DX744 is not the same as the 734C. It is faster and stiffer in the tip. If you primarily stay in the 3/8-1/2oz range weight and then bait, DX744 is the ticket. It will handle larger for football jigs and rigs but for pitching and heavier cover, I rarely go over 1/2oz. I use the DX745 for heavier baits. Neither of these rods are what I consider a flipping stick though. Sounds like the DX 745 is what you are looking for to me.

735c has a mich faster action than the 734 also.

Re: Dobyns Rod ? for all the Dobyns guys out there. (swilliams)

These guys have done such a great job the only thing I can ad is...the 734C I made a bit slower in action. It still rates Fast but with it and the 733 being a little slower, it makes them very versitile. I can still fish jigs on a 734C but honestly I like the 735C or better yet the DX 744 or DX 745 for jigs. They are much faster and load quick and it's what makes a perfect jig rod for me. Thanks for the question and interest in the rods. If I can help, please yell. 530-671-1989

I would recommend DX745 a great jig rod, the 735C is one of my favorites for pitching jigs, frogs, and light swim baits.

It don't get much better than this ask a question regarding different rod actions and the Guy who built and designs them chimes in and tells you the particulars in each model.

Man I love the BBC !!!!!!!! If they gave out awards for best websites this would win for sure

What more could a guy ask for. Gary, let me tell you how happy I have been with your rods! I have a 765cb glass, 684cb, 685cb, 734c and a 702SF. I had my best fishing season this year winning two tournaments and landing my biggest smallmouth all using Dobyns rods. I think I'm going to go with the dx744. Thanks to all the bbc members offering advice and a big thanks to Gary for adding the wow factor to my post! You rock!

i was also looking for a jig rod, not a broom stick but something for small and average jigs, i ordered the 734 and it just came in, i was happy until i read how soft the rod is, hopefully it will work o.k. for me.

The best best guy to work for for sure, very helpful on picking what is right also. Yes by the sounds of it you will need the DX 745 for what your going to use it for.

for small jig the 734 should do you good... I use a 734 for t-rigs up to 3/8 oz and absolutely love it. if your going to 1/2 i would go to a 735 or better a DX745.

did you buy anything yet? i think you'll be sorry if you go with the dx744, you mentioned you'll be using 3/8 to 1 oz. jigs. what most people don't take into consideration is, on a bass jig, the weight that the package says, is just the head weight alone. when you put a 3/8 bass jig on a scale, alot of times it adds up close to 3/4 of an ounce with the weight of the skirt and trailer. go with the dx745.

Of those three, I'd go with the DX745. IMO, 3/8oz (plus plastic) is the bottom of the 'sweet spot' range for the rod. I have used it down to 5/16oz with no problems but feel it really comes alive with 3/8oz & above.

Like the Champion 734C, the DX744 is a extremely versatile rod. For bottom contact duties, I prefer to keep the weight/jighead between 3/16oz - 1/2oz. While it actually be used for a wider range of weights, I feel that is the 'sweet spot' for the rod. The exception is if I'm c-rigging with the rod. When I fish that technique, I'll comfortable using it with weights up to 3/4oz or so.
