Weedless Roundhead mold (weed guard question)

I recently bought a Do-It weedless round head mold. It does sizes 1/8 - 1/4. I was wondering if this mold will accept the weed guards that are just one wire? Hard to explain but i hope you guys know what I'm talking about. If it can, where do i get this type of weed guard?

Without knowing which particular mold you bought, it's hard to know. But, I assume your mold is designed for a fiber weed guard. If so, I'd bet that if you try to mold in the single wire weed guard the lead will creep up the wire and render it just about useless. You could try molding the jig without the weed guard, using a pull pin, and then glue in a single wire. But, that will also be a hassle. I've tried this, but it's a pain! When I've made jigs with a wire weed guard, I made them myself out of thin stainless wire that you can buy from Jann's.

Bend a little hook in the wire so it holds to the hook without falling out. Next slide a skirt collar down the wire and place it where the lead would meet the base pin. You can now pour wire weedguards.

You can drill a small hole into the middle of an 1/8 inch wooden dowel rod for the wire weedgaurd and do the same thing. You can also make a high heat rtv silicone insert buy squeezing the propper size straw full. Let it get hard and cut to length. Drill a hole in the middle.

Or you can make your own out of coiled wire. I'd cut it longer than you want, bend in 1/2, insert it in the dowel or rtv with the "U" or "V" bend inside the head and have two wires if it were me.

I think I would actually try the titanium wire, Not sure of the size needed though. http://lurepartsonline.com/s.nl/it.A/id.6104/.f

Fill the mold in and then grind a groove in were ya want the wire, use the wacky wires from do-it. Fill the mold with cheap auto body filler.

    Re: Weedless Roundhead mold (nitrojoe)

one more question. The mold model number is RWR-8-ays and I'm using Mustad 32798BLN hooks. These are recommend for the mold. It seems as though the base pin gets in the way of the hook. The base pin doesn't fit in the groove without knocking the hook out of place. Is that normal or should i grind the pin down a little?

    Grind the pin if needed.

Here's another easy option for single cable weed guards. Find you a short section of electric wire that fits snug in the mold weed guard slot. Pull out the copper wire and then you can slip the cable weed guard into the plastic sheath and into the mold. You don't need to bend over the guard end, I've never had one pull out. I use 65 lb braided cable for wire guards and clip to length with a nips. This gives you something big enough to handle, just slide it down the cable and clip to lenth after pouring. Set back into the mold and adjust to length, pour again. Really quick.
