    Bump up idle Question

i have a 1993 johnson 150 faststrike i need to bump up my idle about 200 rpm. i have an issue of it running rough at idle and i noticed yesterday that it idles under a load in gear on its own at 500 to 600 rpm with no imput from me, which is a bit low i have read. i need her to idle at about 800 rpm i think, and if i use the hot foot and get it around that rpm range it idles great and super smooth. ive de- carbed my, engine new plugs, carbs cleaned, etc.

in this pic where my finger is pointing is this where i can adjust my idle on the low end ?
( this is not the top of my engine, but it is the engine of a fishing buddy ! )

Re: Bump up idle Question (tritonfaststrike)

ok, well i dont want to increase the timing, but i do want to increase the idle rpms.
so obvisouly this isnt where to accomplish this task. now that i think about it when i put my new throttle cable on i bet it streached out a little and that caused my rpms do decrease. if this is the case and i adjust the little round black knob on the linkage i guess this will increase my rpms. i guess we will find out

On almost any J-E outboard, the idle speed is controlled by timing as the throttle plates are kept completely closed at idle. Most larger motors idle between TDC and 8° ATDC.

Re: Bump up idle Question (tritonfaststrike)

oh ok, i get it now, so i can increase the rpms up by a click or two on the low end side of that timing lever. Seahorse i do remember that this engine does run with the carbs fully closed at idle now, so i will give it a shot by using that adjustment on the timing lever. thanks for the imput TFS and Seahorse, we'll see how it goes !
