Where do I start or How do I start off?

Ok here goes, have been wanting to make my own hard baits for awhile, and maybe do some soft baits as well. Dont' fish tournaments, but do fish with a club. I also live in the northeast so we have long winters that would allow me to have plenty of time to experiment.

My questions are:

What do you buy first and what's a good first project to try.

I have collected some old hard baits that others have given me, they have faded paint or chips. Thought I could sand down and try my hand at painting. I have a big garage with plenty of room to make a great area to work.

Just looking for ideas and suggestions.
