Devcon 2T epoxy issues with a question

Painted a few jigs today and for the first time ever I used D2T to clear coat with. Long story short I used syringes to measure up equal parts in a cup then I mixed throughly when combined. Was able to use about 5-10 minutes then it starts getting stringy and hardens in cup. The baits I was able to coat with look great but just not the 30 minute working time I expected. I was outside in my carport with no breeze and about 75-80 degrees outside. Any thoughts as to what i did wrong? Thanks

Nothing wrong.. You dont get the open pot time you think you should on D2T.. I can only coat 3-4 cranks per batch. You will learn to mix smaller batches and waste less.. But the smaller the batch, the closer you need to watch for a perfect 50/50 mix.

working time and bait coating time wont be the same..... at your temps Mark it's gonna set pretty quick, I've seen different post about keeping it (your cup full of epoxy) on ice in order to keep the temp down to slow setting but I would just move if possible to a cooler spot and apply quickly if your gonna use epoxy, I've had some success slowing down the cure by thinning but you'll lose some strength.

You can get a little extra working time by heating the epoxy with a heat gun or blow dryer. It might help you to get through with the last bait that you are working on.

Re: Devcon 2T epoxy issues with a question (paskeeter)

I guess I move slower than the rest. I only get 2 baits and that's with putting in a little denatured alcohol.
I recently ordered and tried some Bob Smith Industries 20 minute Finish Cure per recommendation of Tator Hog. As slow as I move, I can get 5 baits done. No thinning needed and goes on very smooth. One coat is all that is needed. I've always liked D2T and i find this to be a little better and easier. Thought I'd pass that along because it alleviated allot of frustration.

Great info... Can you post a link where you get it and cost? Just wondering if it yellows, and is "water proof"

Re: Devcon 2T epoxy issues with a question (21XDC)

I just got off the tele with Bob Smith and he said the 20 min is alot thinner than D2T and has longer setting times. He said it takes 12-15 hrs to set as hard as D2T does in 2 hrs... He said their 30 min has a shorter pot life than the 20 min as it sounds backwards. It's about the chemical make up that is different.

He reccomended heated temps for the 20 min for setting times. He also said being "water proof" was questionable..

Re: Devcon 2T epoxy issues with a question (21XDC)

I ordered mine through a local hobby shop to avoid paying $9 in shipping.
It is slightly thinner than D2T. From what I read on their website it is waterproof. I clear my baits, put them on the turner and 8 hours later i'm taking pictures. I does set up even harder 24 hours later. I can tell this when cleaning out the hook hangers. I was a big fan of D2T as E-tex always gave me fits. I'm halfeay through my first set of bottles of BS and have done about 200 baits. Four baits remained tacky which was my fault. For reference, it takes me about 2 cc's of mixture to do 5 baits.
Make sure you do not confuse their epoxy with their Finish Cure. From what I understand the Finish Cure is only available as 20 min. You have an actual work time with the baits of about 15 minutes which is quite a bit more than what I got with D2T. I have no vested interest in this other than it really frustrated me mix up new batches of D2T every 2 baits. I have Emphysema so I have to watch what products I use.

Re: Devcon 2T epoxy issues with a question (Hanzach)

I asked Bob what product was best suited for my use as "water proof" and he was not liking to call it "water proof" as D2T does. He said his brother is the main sales guy and knows more about what products are bought for certain applications. But he was at a trade show this week and un available to talk to.

I'm open minded... But I do alot of leg work before I ruin a bunch of baits.

Re: Devcon 2T epoxy issues with a question (21XDC)

I could have sworn I read it is water proof on their site. Now I can't find that written anywhere. Maybe I wished it? I have been using it for a couple of months and have not had any problems at all. I will go drop a crank in a bucket and see/post what happens.

I checked the lure a few minutes ago (8 hours later) and it was fine. There are no signs that water got under the clear coat. I left the lure in (2.5 KO) and will check again later today.

I just got home and checked again. Everything appears to be fine. This is after 18 hours submerged. The top coat is tight to the lure all the way around without any cracks, bubbles, etc. There isn't any damage to the paint. I would think if any water got in then the paint would get damaged in one form or another.
