Has anyone built any rods using these blanks from the Mud Hole catalog? I was wondering how sensitive they are compared to a Falcon or Skeet Reese rod. They are priced reasonable so I thought about ordering one and getting a guy to build a carolina rig rod off it.
mhx are nice blanks. built on 2 so far FS904 and a SB782 - both were reasonably light weight and straight for the money.
couldn't tell ya if they are more sensitive than the rods mentioned. You should have no trouble making a rod lighter than a skeet reese rod just by using normal sized guides and reel seats.... or go crazy and use size 3 or 4 micros and you're on to something.
The only real way to do an apples to apples sensitivity comparison would be using 2 bare blanks. The less weight you add to the blank the more sensitive it will be. its hard, but you have to ignore marketing cuz its all physics baby.
talk to ALX about some of his new hydra blanks. Expecting to get a few here shortly, spec sheets look outstanding.
I have built a handful of rods with the MHX blanks, and I really like 'em, I think they are about the best bang for the buck out there. Marketing talk says they are based on the Loomis IMX. To me they don't feel quite as light as IMX rods, but like thedude says, it should be pretty easy for the end result to be lighter than most factory rods, and comparable in weight to many higher end rods.
I can also attest to their durability, I used several MHX rods during all of 2010, and put them through the paces. They held up great and still are in great shape.
I built myself a Carolina Rig rod from the MHX L904 because I wanted a little bit more of a moderate bend. I would say their description of Mod-Fast is spot on for the blank. I built it using micros and a standard tip so the tip could take a little more abuse from the weight... I can cast it a country mile and have been very pleased with the rod.
Give the MHX blanks a try, I think you will be more than satisfied.

I've built on quite a few MHXs. Personally I don't think they have the feel of an IMX. Power, action, etc is on pretty close. They make a decent rod and a good builder can definitely makea nice rod using them.
They price on them is great and they typically have them in stock.
You may also want to ask if anyone giving referrals in the future is on their "pro staff". Don't know the details of the program, but I would imagine it will go the way of most other things where folks are sponsored.
Personally I like something US made. Thanks for the prop Dude... waiting on that last blank to come in (got 20 coming) and yours will head on.
