98 225 vindicator Hard to start

Motor is a 98 225 evinrude vindicator. New to me boat, I've only had it out twice, but both times at the ramp motor did not want to start. Crank forever, without even trying to start. Push key to choke motor, nothing. Eventually, after a very long time it will start, then sputter. Then It will fire up, smoke like a banshee and I will have to feather the gas to keep it running. Once it settles down and idles and I run it, thing fires right up. I can shut it down and with a flick of key, it will start again and again. Any ideas?

I am priming motor w/ primer bulb before backing boat down ramp.

Pump the primer bulb until firm. Hold the key in, or pump the key for several seconds before starting. When started, if it sputters, pump the key a few more times. Works for me.

I have the same motor..They are cold blooded as heck...I use the procedure outlined above...Talk to her a little bit and give her a few strokes, she will fire when she is ready...

Might want to check the sync n lync.... also look and see if the plastic cover is on the timing roller. If it isn't , then it isn't getting the intial timing it needs to crank...:)

May also want to have your quick start sensor tested.

So I finally got around to changing out the old plugs on the motor, and whoever had it before me had the wrong plugs in it! It had QL77YC champion plugs. They were pretty well fouled out too. I wonder if this had something to do with the hard starting? Started pretty easily today on the muffs, but it was quite a bit warmer out too.
