Loomis GLX - rebuild or modification, experts please advise..

I am a huge fan of my 2 BCFR894 loomis rods. I am interested in having a rubber or foam end to reduce the side impact. Can I convert to a split grip and have an exposed blank tipped with a foam end??

Please give me your thoughts all experts as after this past weekend I have a big bruise from the jig bites....don't get me wrong everytime I feel the pain it reminds me of the wackin I put on the fish but enough's enough..

    Thanks....

I do not own a Loomis but you can remove those hard plastic butt caps. I think George Roth has a article on his site about it? Just heat up the cap with a heat gun to where the epoxy gets soft and remove the cap. I replaced my hard plactic caps on my Lowriders with cork ones.

This particular rod is a solid cork peice......no rubber cap to take off. Can I remove some of the cork and replace end with a foam knob?

yes. go to george roth's site - he has a very good article called "splitting your grips" that will show you what to do.

1st decide what you want, split grip or new but cap. If it's just a butt cap buy desired cap, file down the cork to fit butt cap and epoxy. To make a split grip, first hold the rod as you would if you were fishing and mark the cork just below your hand. This is usually about 21/2 inches. Clean off all cork from mark to end of rod. Buy preformed rear cork with butt cap grove, cut to desired length, usually 11/2" to 2", rheem rear butt and epoxy cork and butt to rod, sand when dry, and you are done.
However, If the rod fit well it wouldn"t bruise your ribs. Thats why you should buy custom rods.

I've done quite a few just like you mentioned. I did a GLX for a board member a couple months ago. Drop nucularstratos an IM if you're interested to know the quality of work (in case you don't want to take it on yourself).

Roth's site would be the most helpful if you decide to do this yourself.
