1989 XP150 Ignition Help needed from Evinrude Guru's Please...

Need some help please. Here is my story...
I have an 89 XP150, the motor run real good, then one day it wouldn't crank, I took it to the boat shop and they told me that the powerpack went bad along with it needed some new gaskets so I had them do what they could, I got it back and run it about 10 mins then brought it back home, I went to crank it one day on the muffs at home to let it run a bit and it wouldn't crank, took it back to the shop they told me that it is not getting any spark at the plugs, which I checked that at home and it wasn't getting any spark, but they wanted more money to look at it farther. So, with a new powerpack, could something else go wrong? I have the full service manual on my boat motor, and I have tried a couple of the test it says to run for trouble shooting, but as soon as I almost get one of the test done it says, before you replace the stator check this or that, then go here and check this and that or that will elimate those two...and I am not sure where to go from here. Does anyone have a simple test that I can run to trouble shoot my problem. I am thinking it is either the powerpack, stator, or timerbase but don't want to replace all of them to know...any and all help will be greatly apprecaited.

ALSO, the boat shop did tell me that the small (free) test they done did eliminate all problems up front, and that the problem was in the back at the motor. Hope that helps.

    Thanks guys,

    Johnny

Disconnect the big red plug and use a remote starter switch hooked up to the starter it should bust right off if it is on the boat side. If it does. Bad kill switch or bad ignition switch. $$ is on the ignition switch.

I hate to sound dumb, but how do I do that?

I know what big red connector you are talking about, I can do that, and then I do what? Send a jumper to the starter with that disconnected?

Big red plug disconnects the remote control. Power to the starter is still there. Hook negative to ground and positive to starter mash the button. Make sure you have H20 running, won't cut off with the plug disconnected.
