    Painting tungsten weights?

Anyone tried painting their own tungsten weights? I was trying to figure out a cheap and durable way to paint them on my own. I was thinking Powder Paint or finger nail polish. Has anyone tried this before? I know the Powder Paint works great on lead, but not sure if it will adhear to tungsten or not. The finger nail polish should work, but I don't know if I can get a good solid covering or how durable it would be.

    try a Sharpie....

Or lightly sand the weight first before painting with powder.

first you have to get all the old paint off if it was painted before, dont sand it then go to auto parts store or wallmart and get some Duplicolor spray paint called metalcast in your choice of color and paint it, it gives you a anodized look!!

I don't remember the brand name, but they make a powder coat that comes in a jar. You simply heat up the weight and stick it in the powder. It works great on shakyheads. It might work on Tungsten.

I bought a bunch of unpainted Tg weights last year and painted them. Here is what worked for me.

First I took a piece of cardboard or a box and stuck a bunch of toothpicks in edge of it to hold the weights. Place the weights on the toothpicks and paint them with spray paint. I used paint from Lowe's. Once dry I took two part epoxy, mixed it together, mixed the glitter color (black, red, blue, etc) and painted the epoxy on the weights. Let them dry and go fishing. It worked well. I think I only had one that the paint peeled off of.

Keep in mind...if you use 5 minute epoxy work fast. Look for something with a little more working time.

my understanding, this is all Tru-tungsten is doing....coating with Dura-seal which is an epoxy/poly type coating as a protectant.

I don't know but that seems about right.

You could use the powder coast paint but if the weights have plastic inserts then that won't work. The inserts will melt.

    Re: Painting tungsten weights? (cfruel)

I just finished painting a bunch of tungsten weights. I tried using the powder coat paint first only to find as mentioned before that the plastic insert melted and I had to ream each weight so it wasn't a total loss. I also found that the powder paint will chip easily if the weights clang together too much.

What I have found that works great is to use a paint made by Component Systems. This is the standard "Lure & Jig finish" paint you buy at Cabelas or BPS. It's very thick and almost dries to a vinyl type finish. It's primitive but I have found that if I unbend a colored paperclip { it's a vinyl coated paperclip} It fits perfectly in the hole. This prevents the paint from clogging the insert so you don't have a problem threading the line through it. I dip the weight into the paint jar and then hang the weights up till they drip off the extra paint. I use a cotton swab to dab off any excess drips. once it dries for a day I then dip the in the same type of paint but the clear gloss finish. I painted a bunch watermelon a few black and a couple white for the spawn. Hope this helps.

When using the jarred powder coat paint we had the same problem. We have discovered if you put them in the oven for a short second "bake" the powder coating becomes almost indestructible. Apparently heating the weight makes the coating stick but it's not enough to make it cure.
