    Is it worth it?

I have an All Star Classic 8' that telescopes.
I would like to know if anyone here that builds rods can turn this into a 7'6"
and the have the handle converted to a split grip?
Wanted to know if it is worth the effort and cost of work plus shipping to and from.

    Thanks

It can be done of course but there are some decisions that you would have to make. Cutting 6 inches from the rear of the rod is the easiest and least expensive way but the handle probably isn't long enough to lose 6 inches and still be long enough to use. If you don't want an exposed blank reel seat on it the handle and reel seat can be taken off and replaced from the rear as long as the blank doesn't have to much taper from the butt forward but if you DO want an exposed blank reel seat then quite a few of the guides would have to be removed as well because the those seat have to go on from the tip. The exposed blank seats are sized to fit snug to the blank so there are no gaps in the exposed portion of the seat. That's the decision on the handle and seat, now for the guides. Basically it depends on what kind of seat you want and the taper of the blank as to whether or not to go from the back. If you do want the exposed seat then basically you're looking at a complete rebuild. Some people can justify the expense for rebuilding a rod and some would just rather have a new rod built. The average rebuild cost is going to be around $100 plus parts (that's what I charge at least) then there's the shipping cost which will be around $50 to and from.

I tell all my customers the same thing. It is only worth it if the rod has sentimental meaning to you.

My cost for a rebuild is $120 labor plus parts. You really arent saving any money at all with a rebuild. So basically unless you can't live without this rod, you are better off starting from scratch.

You are about an hour and half from me. Shipping wouldnt be as bad, and if you wanted to drop it off or meet somewhere you would have to worry about shipping.

yeah......just too much that can go wrong with this intensive rebuild , and there is no guarantee that you will even like it.

Pick a new blank, and build it to your spec's.

    besides............everybody needs another rod....huh???
