Only thin with acetone... Thats what Devcon reccomeded when I called them.

denatured alcohol works well for me and no stinky fumes

Instead of thinning devcon why not try some of the table top epoxys? They go on alot thinner....etex lite,crystal sheen etc....
I've been using flex coat for the past several months and love it. I still use thinned devcon for a sealer coat to give a smooth finish to paint on.
