Has anyone ever tried to stain cork with wood stain? I am working on a new spinning rod and would like for the cork to be black. Any ideas??
Thanks

I say go for it! I have not done it personally but have heard of it being done.
Stain can have a tendency to bleed out in a sweaty palm .You would have to seal it . That might defeat the purpose of useing cork in the first place.
I would try it on a scrap piece first.

Cork is quite dense and doesn't take stain very well. Your best option might be Andy's burnt burl. It's more of a dark brown, but it's the closest thing to black I've seen.....and if you Cork Seal it, it gets even darker.
Here's what it looks like after the cork seal.

Thanks all for the response. I did try it on a small piece of cork and a handle on an old rod. I didn't like the result. I may contact Andy For the burnt burl.

That is a nice looking rod, do you make them/sell?

I'VE WORKED WITH STAINS A LOT AND I DON'T THINK COMMON OIL BASED STAINS WILL DO THE JOB. I WOULD TRY A LAQUER BASED STAIN LIKE CABINET MAKERS USE. I BELIEVE YOU CAN GET IT AT A SHERWIN WILLIAMS STORE. IF THAT DOESN'T WORK I'M LOST.
using a cork seal will actually change the color of the cork...its pretty neat really![]()
