John, do you use a hot plate to heat your plastic? I was using a microwave.

How much did you try to heat up at once, and how long did you heat it for between stirring?

Do it 30 second intervels this will keep it from burning. Stir every time also, I stir with a candy thermometer that way I can check my temps. I usually do 2 to 4 oz of plastic at a time.

I only heated 4 oz. and heated it 1 minute and 30 seconds. Took it out, stirred it up and heated it again for 50 seconds. Took it out again, stirred it up again and heated it again for 30 seconds. I'm gonna try it again this weekend and just put it in for about 30 to 40 seconds to start.

The plastic will be smoking somewhat when it hits a good temperature especially if you use softener or a heat additive. The smaller the batch of plastic the less time it takes. You can always put it in for a few more seconds to heat it. If I am heating less that 4 ounces when it is close to the temperature I want I will heat it for 15 to 20 second increments. Take it slow heating it. Don't give up.

Remeber the salt holds that head a bit better and makes her burn...

    Re: Burned plastic!! (Pat Powell)

pat, i use pots for pourin plastic. alot of the burn depends on the plastic you are using. the best plastic i have found is MF plastic ouf Dallas Fort Worth. i have tried it all too. MF is the only plastic thet i have found that has very little to no settling.

    Re: Burned plastic!! (boatcop)

Boatcop, I purchased the stik kit from Del Mart.
I only burned it the first time. I'm using pyrex measuring cups to pour, it does a good job. I just hate adding all that salt. It takes the colors out of my worms.

Oh, by the way, welcome to the BBC. And thanks for the help, I can use every bit I can get!!
